Being Brought Around Because Of My Language And Behavior
I won't say I'm prim and proper. I'm forward, I voice my opinion. My position title was manager, I had finally broken into the bonus pool. A lunch table in the cafeteria, three other female coworkers, I said 'tear him a new asshole'. Behind me was a suited man from way up in the company, he turned to me angry, 'did I hear you right?'
By the arm, lifted half off my feet he dragged me to the sink. Holding up the soap he threatened to wash my mouth out. I had not been intimated like in forever, but his hand squeezing my arm, cutting off the circulation, his eyes were angry, his stare made my knees weak. He let me know, not releasing his stare, 'don't ever let me hear you use that type of language, I will wash your mouth out for it'. Yes sir.
Being put in my place in front of my coworkers by a man I had never seen. A coworker whispered in my ear 'that's Mr. Hamilton'. He owned the business. In 'his' business every employee is his son or daughter, and he gets in your business. One of his orders was no drinking on company business and that includes after work get togethers. A staunch Baptist. And now he knew me in a very personal manner.
The next day I was called up to his office. Not since I got caught shoplifting and my grandfather came to get me, was my stomach hurting, my hands sweating. I had to go alone, his secretary told me he would call me in in a minute. His office was huge, half a floor overlooking the skyline. He offered me a seat, held my HR file in his hand. Only then did I notice that the HR Director was there too.
'What are you going to do to apologize to your coworkers?' He put a bar of soap in front of me. No cussing, no fowl language, no filthy expressions. No girl of his will use that language.
I apologized to my coworkers, in front of the HR Director. The bar of soap sits on my desk to remind me. Why the HR Director offered me a job with her, I don't have an answer. I was sent to several seminars, including one on proper behavior for young women. My job now, dealing with personnel, requires me to dress and behave professional. And I know that my behavior is monitored by Mr. Hamilton. Every time I see him all I see is my Grandfather, I'm sure to tell him I am now a church girl. And I let him know that I keep that bar of soap on my desk to remind me to mind my manners and language, at work. I can now stare back at him and hold my own with him. I'm a good girl, but I'm also a grown woman.
