Poor Little Rich Girl

Maybe this doesn't belong here. I'm 27, my parents both passed. They were up in years, I was an 'afterthought', or more likely a surprise. My parents were both open persons when it came to philosophy of life, including sex. They were very well to do. Millionaires many times over. Now it's my headache.

Among the personal belongings I inherited an extensive art collection, I can't sell the house without breaking up the collection. My mother had an extensive j*welry collection, very nice pieces. Just not for a 27 year old girl. My father died without a son, he left me, with a letter, his impressive watch collection. They really are beautiful, but I'm not a boy. What do I do with all this? Giving it away, to whom? I have the money for appraisals, and an inventory. I know what every piece is, watches, Mom's pieces, the art, the real estate, the investments.

For obvious reasons I can't identify myself, only that it is in the USA. I'm a little rich bitch, not that I wasn't before my Dad died. I have lawyers drafting tax, legal structures, hidden, with random names like random letters of the alphabet. I'm in good hands, I'm well aware of the estate, my father kept me in the loop. Now I don't know who my 'friends' are, and I'm scared to get close with anyone.

I get it, been there.... not on your scale... and done that.
I maintain a strict rule of compartmentalization.... so keep your financial life and your emotional life separate.
Only trust people who want nothing financial from you.

Trust your lawyers, but have them independently audited at a minimum every 2 years, annually as you seem to be able to afford it.
Good luck.

Best thing you can do imo is try and meet people without mentioning any of your wealth and over time if you trust them significantly you can open up to them about it, altho offc you need to accept that it might overwhelm some so don't do it too late when you are overly attached. Try and see the glass half full and use your wealth as best as you can to develop yourself as a person and focus on things you yourself want to focus on. Or on the other hand you could use your wealth to help others if you really can't find what to spend it on, invest in new ideas, other businesses etc. The world is yours rn so take full advantage of it. You got this, try not to buckle with the pressure.

I inherited millions recently. I was mature and wise so very lucky. I didn’t even tell my best friend, dad or brothers how much Im worth. No friend cousin acquaintance or client knows. It’s much easier this way. And I don’t give out loans. Keep money and friends separate. NO LOANS. I’m very happy and lost none of my relationships.

I live from paycheck to paycheck and have most of my life
I have grown children who love me and who I trust with my life

I don't care about having a lot of money.
I've never met many wealthy people who were happy.

But the fact that there's a conflict within about this says a lot.
It says your parents did something right.
Something that can often be very hard to do with a lot of money.
They raised a quality human being.

I can't really know what it's like to be in your situation.
I do know that when I give or help others, it makes me feel better about myself.

You don't have to figure everything out right now.
Start with a donation somewhere.
See how it makes you feel.
Then go from there.

Echoing what other people have said, try to keep it on the down low, but otherwise enjoy it.

You mentioned not being able to sell the house, do you want to? You could just live there. Then you don't need to break up the collection, and you can enjoy it.

Putting it another way, my wife and I are pretty well off, but you wouldn't know it most of the time. My car is 10 years old. I work on it myself and have it set up slightly custom and fun. She has several cars, nothing especially valuable, just cars she likes, from the 70's, 80's, and 90's. Her daily driver is a 2018 SUV that we paid $28k for. Our house was built in 1996, and we're planning to build out the garage to fit the cars and give her a she shed too. We take trips and our kids go to a private school.

It's nice to have enough money to not have to worry about money, but we're not trying to impress anyone so we don't worry about the money so it doesn't become a burden. That's what I would aim for, if you can.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Good luck.

I was 25 when I found myself alone and wealthy. My father was a lawyer and my mother a doctor, both came from significantly wealthy families. They died in a plane crash over that year's Thanksgiving. I could not act like I had nothing, everyone knew I had a lot. My parents were part of the local high society.

I went on a trip alone. Far away to sit on a beach and contemplate my navel. I was alone and I was hit up by some Australians. I was so naive it hurts to remember. A man in his forties on business was at the same resort town looking at properties for investment. He noticed the Australians and he came over and asked them to leave and told them I was his wife and to leave me alone.

He apologized but he told me that I had nothing to do with them. These types were there to either take things from me or use me for reasons he didn't want to get into. He told me that now that I had been made by them I needed to pack my things and find another place to stay, but preferably not Thailand.

The long and short of it is that I feel in love with him, a man twenty years older and out of nowhere. I returned and got married and set up to be a wife and mother and we built a house in the mountains. He is an investor in real estate and from time to time has to tend to his business. He never once allowed my wealth to be commingled with his business.

I hate to put it this way, actually I love to say it, but he took my father's place. I am a Daddy's girl through and through. He is involved with the investors and over the last ten years he has close to doubled my holdings. He laughs at me and tells me that once every quarter I need to look at my holdings and laugh at how fat they are. We don't touch them, I live the life he can afford to give me. There are trusts set up for my children. My children are young, they aren't told about what my parents left me.

Little girl the best unbiased advice for you to follow on this page is comment 1.
The random audit will keep the lawyers honest hopefully.
It couldn't hurt for you to take a business course and basic accounting to better understand it all. Being even moderately educated on the subject will help reduce any anxiety.
It's true, people and I mean all people get weird about money.
I've seen it ruin friendships and family.
Best of luck going forward, for the time being....trust only yourself

Contact auction houses about the art and watches. I know Christy's takes a percentage of the sale and have a few sales a year. It's a way to be private and to find a good home for them, on top of recouping the investment. If it's not at their scale, they can point you in the right direction.

Our oldest and closest friend . Are millionaires many times over . He sold his goup of companies and retired . They bought their house 40 years ago . It is in England , and over 350 years old . The wife was a teacher , becuase she enjoyed doing it . If you did not know them , you would think they are just nomal people . They are not flash . The wife does not have j*welery , she says she just loses it . The only thing that they do have , is matching Rolex watches . When they were going on a star very expensive cruise . She needed posh dresses for the night time . They bought them from a used clothes shop . It belongs to another of our friends , aunt . Niether her or her aunt know them . Thinking they were shopping on a tight budget . They love to find bagains . Shopping at cheap supermakets . They come to parties at our house . They get on well with evryone . No on has a clue about them . They even use public transport . Very few people know that they have a holiday home in Spain . They paid £450,000 cash for it 25 years ago . It is a large old bodega in a small village in land . Since then , they have renovated it . Thy keep a sports car there for transport . Just 3 close friends know this . We can all go out there for holidays when we want to . Just paying for flights and a rental car . If they are there . We don't need to take any money . He has a Spanish business acount . That gives a better exchange rate . He gives us the money . We pay him back when is in the UK . Somtimes this can be many months . They have bought all their children houses . None of the children or grandchildren . Act as if their parents are wealthy . Evryone speaks in our local dialect . It is best to play it down .
