Navigating In New Waters

As a Fine Arts major I spent some time with an artist in New Mexico. She paints for her pleasure, if someone likes it she might give it away, or not. During my stay she told me she had never felt the need for the company of a man.

It was my first exposure to a lifelong lesbian woman.

Later, after I graduated and returned to my home town I dabbled in painting, and worked in my family's business. I didn't find anyone interesting enough to date, and spent my social time with a female friend. My family encouraged me to associate with various promising males, pushed me to find an interesting man attractive. I surrendered and at twenty three I got married and followed my husband on his career, always dabbling in painting. My husband encouraged my art, and discouraged me working.

Five years later at twenty eight I again surrendered to family pressure and became pregnant with my daughter, three years later a son. My husband did well, I never needed to work, my hobby was painting, some I gave to people who liked them, some I donated for fund raiser. I was the quintessential soccer Mom in the Suburban.

The reality of my sex life was that it wasn't a sex life. My husband never expressed his needs, and from time to time I guessed this or that woman at work was where he got off. By the time I was thirty five I 'knew' I wasn't sexually interested in my husband, never had been. My husband listened, held my hand, he wasn't surprised, he always knew, before he married me. How had I been so blind?

My husband confessed to extramarital sex with a wide variety of women, but one was his sweetheart. I asked to meet her, but he declined. She was a secret, his other woman.

When my daughter was in high school I met a woman who became my close friend. Raised in Greece she was exotic, sexual, excited my libido. My first lesbian attraction. We remained friends with benefits, her husband a pilot. My husband was understanding, he looked the other way, gave me room to explore my new sexual awakening. All along he stood by me, never felt threatened, he knew that I was never going to leave him.

As we stand, he has his sweetheart, I know who she is now. I have my friend. Not perfect, but it's more than I can ask for. Publicly we are friends, with same age daughters. Oh, and I have my painting.
