If I Knew Then What I Know Now...
When the hair on my legs began to grow, my mom asked me when I was going to shave it. I replied that boys don't shave their legs. She would tell me how nice my curly hair would look on a girl. I suspect that she left my sister's girl scout handbook and Cherry Ames booksout for me to find them. When I got to high school, I actually had a girl's waist and hips. For some reason the girls gym teacher, whose name I use, seemed to take an unusual interest in me. A few of the girls told me that she wanted me as a flag girl on the color guard, but 50 years ago the idea was outlandishly crazy. In retrospect, I would have fit in perfectly with the high white boots, uniform, and beret they wore. When she passed a few years ago I figured that she was 20 years older than me. Had I followed my mom's lead I would have been a girl scout, a color guard girl, and the gym teacher's sissy. I would have had a weekday job as a medical transcriptionist, dressed in a Cherry Ames-style nurses uniform, and volunteering at the local girl scout council store on Saturday. Saturday night and Sunday would have been our love time, unless she thought I needed some discipline, in which case she would drop me off at a convent for the weekend. The Sisters would give me discipline and in return I would service their needs.
