A Man With Two Wives

On an overnight flight I had a nice lady beside me. The flight was long enough to include dinner (I'm obviously dating myself). She was the talker and I was listener. As we ate our airplane tv microwave dinners she bragged at her cooking skills. In fact, she told me, she was a very good housekeeper. She even knew how to darn socks. With her hand on my arm she whispered that she had been born Mormon but her father had left the flock when she was fifteen, after taking a second wife.

Her wine went to her head and she asked me how Mormons have sex. I had no idea, I had never heard that one. 'All the wives sat quietly and the husband went 'enie, meinie, miny, moe' and took that wife to bed.' Ha, Ha.

I asked her if in her home did her father have more than one wife. Well as a matter of fact, there were two wives in her home growing up. At that point I sat quietly, what do you say? She sat silently for a while, and sat up and said she was going to meet a family that was looking for another wife.

We rode in silence for a while. "Are you married?" She asked. I said no, I had never met a woman who wanted to be an old fashioned wife. She put her hand on my arm, and looked around my shoulder, "I want to be an old fashioned wife, that's how we were raised".

She looked beautiful in the low light of the plane, night flying by in the window. "Are you proposing to me?", I asked. "If you want an old fashioned wife, and a half dozen little faces around the kitchen table? Then I'm looking for a husband".

We got married two weeks later. She lived up to her promise, and we grew old together. Many times she asked if I didn't want another wife, to be company to her. One day I came home and there was a woman there, "my cousin Althea", she said. "She's a good Mormon girl, a good Mormon wife, if you will have her".

For all these years my Mormon wife and her Mormon cousin Althea have made a home together. Some neighbors looked askance, others minded their own business. I had never met a Mormon until that red eye flight, and by the time we landed I had found a Mormon wife. An old fashioned Mormon, not in favor with the established order. And she asked her cousin Althea to come and make a home with her.
