Papa's Little Girl
I was always serious, my goal in school was Valedictorian. I went to Stanford on a full ride scholarship, earned a degree in Chemical Engineering. Followed that up with an MBA at the Kellogg School of Management. On to a Fortune 100. Assertive, I worked my career into management. No man was going to stand in my way, stop me.
Behind my back I was loud and aggressive, that bitch, avoid her. I had coworkers, direct reports, but no friends. I worked, I was a compulsive workaholic. I turned 32 and had a slight? heart attack, followed by a complete breakdown. I was medically ordered to take a sabbatical. I went to the south of France and went crazy. I met a man at the market. He was abusive, French, talked down at me. I couldn't work up the nerve to answer him, I just took it.
Before my six months were up I had 'cooked' coq au vin for him. I made early morning French press Coffee. Walked the dog with him. He took advantage of me, insisted he said, I learn my place between men and women. My French failed me, my body surrendered. When the day came to pack my things he told me to stay. Period.
I live in France, an ordinary wife of a petulant Frenchman. I converted from Methodist to Catholic or he wouldn't marry me. I work part time, consulting for American firms doing business in France, I speak passable French now, but I'm not native.
This man is everything I hated, but I learned to keep my tongue in my mouth before he grabs me by the tongue to shut off my complaining. He does spank if he has to. I jump ahead to avoid it. He's got his idea of French cooking, I'm not there yet. The word Chauvinist is French origin for a reason. French women are Chauvinists too. Better have a woman friend to complain to, no man will listen.
I learned a trick, be a little girl. Papa likes that.
