What Happened In Vegas Didn't Stay In Vegas
I woke up in a room in Vegas with a strange man who told me I had asked him to marry me that night and I was engaged. I had a ring, not a real diamond, I didn't remember meeting him, much less getting engaged. Hung over, sick at the stomach I asked him if he had taken advantage of me.
He swore he hadn't touched me because I passed out. He took me to an urgent care and they ran bloodwork which was positive for alcohol. No evidence of anything else. After I recovered and was back in my senses my girlfriend told me I had gotten into a drinking craze and I had passed out in a booth. That's where this man and his buddies found me and I insisted on getting married to protect my honor. My friend, and he and his buddies went along and we had an engagement party in a club.
After moving to Houston with him I was embarrassed that I wasn't actually married so he agreed and we did the courthouse marriage thing. I am legally married in Texas.
I turned 24 and I told him that by the time my mother was 24 she had three kids. He said to go for it so I did. I now have two kids. We live in a suburb in a middle class neighborhood, I finished my college degree and became certified to teach, I teach third grade.
For our tenth year anniversary we are repeating our vows, in front of friends and family at the Bellagio where our 'engagement' party happened. This time no alcohol. This time a real Tiffany diamond. This time a real Minister. This time wide awake. Two kids by our side.
