Lesbian Female / 60
I Paired Off Forty Years Ago With An Older Gay Man
I turn 60 this year. I have always been 'liberated'. But I also have to admit I had a man who could afford to keep me and let me play women's lib. He is older than me by twenty years, he is in good health and buys me whatever I seem to want at the moment. It is a 'strange' relationship, a liberated lesbian and a gay man. I moved in with him during my junior year in college and I still live with him.
When I moved in I was having trouble. A bad break up, thrown out on the street. He lived in the same apartment complex and gave me a room in his apartment. I 'instinctively' started to fill the role of the female and he instinctively filled the role of the dominant male. I recognized it but was powerless to change it. A 20 year old girl and a 40 year old man.
He was attracted to a certain type of men. Once I moved in with him he stopped bringing men over. It was an unspoken rule, he wouldn't bring men over and I wouldn't bring women over. In our space I would live out the role of the younger woman and he would live out the role of the doting older male. I never paid rent, I never paid for anything after I moved in with him.
I went to my share of bra burnings, and lesbian activists meetings. I learned that showing up without a bra on was a big mistake. Decorum was a broken and I got in trouble. I had to take a bra to burn, but never come home without one on. During those years in my twenties I was perpetually horny. Like him, I was attracted to a certain type of women. It was so obvious once you saw the pattern.
I never left because quite frankly I couldn't. I talked about it with a lover more than once, but leaving him was out of the question. Likewise he never left me, he went out, had his flings, but we were together, tied to each other. For my 21st birthday he gave me an apron. An apron symbolized 'marriage'. I still have that apron.
At 60 I don't get out much, from the sexual point of view. I'm tired really. I don't have the energy for a young woman with ideas. At 80 he doesn't see men anymore. I can't really remember the last time he went out to be with a man. I have a girlfriend group, all lesbians, and we travel together and we are each other's emotional support. He has me.
