Maybe We're Lesbians, We're Going To Find Out
I grew up in a small town in central Texas, one stoplight. Friday night football. For a variety of reasons I had lots if friends but no boyfriend. I attended a small private school in San Antonio, lots of girls. Lots of competition. I walked out with a degree in communications, looking for a job away from food service. I followed a friend from my hometown and ended up in Houston, ss roommates with her. We didn't git into the fast crowd or the beautiful people. We palled around, that resulted with being cast as a couple. We didn't realize we were living in the part of town of gays and lesbians. Neither one of us got lucky.
I changed jobs to work for a Christian Network. She worked for Coach at an upscale mall. At work I was confronted, 'was I a lesbian?' You can't ask that, but they did. 'Nothing personal but you know that's not our image'.
Why that day I answered 'what makes you think I'm a lesbian?' Well, frankly you walk like one, you live with another woman, you have never had a boyfriend You look 'butch', your girlfriend is so sexy, but it's obvious yo everyone she only has eyes for you. I went home without a job, and asked my roommate 'are we lesbians?'
I've known her since grade school, we never dated, we finished college, we live together. If not lesbians, then what are we? We agreed that there was a lot to it, neither one was surprised.
We are exploring, testing. Maybe we are, maybe not, but we are going to find out.
