Tragedy Sent Me Away From Where I Was Supposed To Grow Up,

We lived in Queretaro where I was born. I was fourteen the day my family was taken from me in a highway accident. I was with a friend, a girl who was on the volleyball team with me. We were spending the afternoon together, my family, parents and brothers, had gone to my grandmother's house.

It wasn't until the next day when I was taken home that I knew about the accident. I was an orphan. My family wasn't rich, we were middle class. My father was a safety engineer with a factory, my mother a housewife. We lived in a mixed neighborhood, in a rented house. I went to a girl's school, my brothers to a boy's school. There wasn't anything left for me, the funerals took everything. I was sent to live with my mother's single older sister in Monterrey.

She worked as a government employee, my father called her a bureaucrat. He never was her friend. My aunt made room for me in a small room used as a servant's room, if the owner had a servant. I went to live as a maid. I had to leave school, my aunt couldn't pay. The government school was very bad, and I was more educated than my grade. I was there, and to live there, I was her maid.

A family friend knew about a family that had twin girls and needed help taking care of them. They lived in Houston, Texas. They sponsored me, with an education visa. And I would get paid. My aunt agreed, they would pay her.

The father was a new university professor. The wife could not work, she was a housewife. A woman who worked with the husband got me a place at a girl's school. I went half a day. I was now sixteen, in the ninth grade. The other half day I took English, ELS. The family took care of me, and stopped paying my aunt. I helped the wife, including help with the twin girls.

She and I became lovers. Like schoolgirls. Her first love, my second love, my first was my girlfriend when my family died. It started as simple affection, and grew and grew into a deep love affair. I finished high school, went to The University oh Houston, legally I was a Dreamer. I got married to an older man when I was 22. Although it was never meant to be a marriage, there was too much familiarity and it became a live marriage. One in which he became very attached.

Twenty years have passed since I gave birth to my daughter Ana. I have two other daughters. The couple who needed me remained in the US when the husband was offered a permanent job. She and I have remained close, closer than sisters. We remain lovers. The twins are on their own, both college graduates, they are my daughter's older sisters. The man I married, is still my husband. We never broke up the marriage. Having husbands and families allowed us to have our life together.
