My World In South Texas On The Paved Side Of The Border

I'm 100% Hispanic. I have five siblings, I'm the next to the youngest. We grew up on an unpaved road, in a small house with one bathroom. We didn't have a washer or dryer. As girls we took the clothes to the laundromat on the corner beside the gas station. Everyone knew everyone, all the girls had babies, even the lesbians. A man was good, but not necessary. Everyone came from families with more than one father and had kids with more than one boyfriend.

I am one of those lesbians. I first tried out with a teacher. I was active by the ninth grade and was this older girl's girlfriend. She got pregnant by a mechanic and moved in with him to play housewife. My turn was coming, I just had no idea I was going to end up pregnant with a 'white' Mexican. He is a lawyer and I met him when I was helping my sister clean buildings. He saw me, he wanted me, my sister pushed me because he had money. I got pregnant, for child support and maintenance.

He decided to marry me, I was 17 and he was 35. I had to finish high school with a baby. He insisted I go to college. I went to a two year college and had two more kids. I went to the four year college and graduated pregnant. I have four children. I'm still a lesbian with a husband. My best friend is also a lesbian, we in lesbian love with each other. She's younger and wants to have children.

When all my siblings and significant others and all the nieces and nephews get together there are forty one of us. My husband is the only white Mexican, and he's older and a lawyer so he's the man of the house when we get together. More than once he's defended a relative.

Of all of my siblings and their partners I'm the only one with a college degree. No one thinks of me as 'lesbian', only that girl who is really affectionate with me is my 'novia', and that she's twenty two and needs to get pregnant.
