The Memories Haven't Left Me, The Night I Became A Man
I was 18 when I went to the Lutheran college my father graduated from. I got a weekend job at the local Ramada Inn as relief night clerk. The manager was a woman in her fifties, Olga. She stayed around until after midnight, When she locked the front doors and returned at 6:30 to open up and let in the cook and the Silvia the morning waitress.
One night after she was gone and locked in I got bored and went through the drawers in her office. I found a file folder with a picture of a naked woman. I found a letter from a man asking for her autographed picture, except it was addressed to Madelyn, at the hotel P:O. Box.
On different nights I found one or two letters, and after looking further I found a manila envelope addressed to Miss Everly. A dozen pictures of naked women, some with big red kisses. I had stumbled upon her little side business. None of the pictures were her, but it made me wonder what she had looked like when she was my age.
She wasn't unaware of my rifling, I found those pictures whenever I looked for them. One night when I opened the book to record the nights occupancy. A picture, an old one, of a young woman. It was her, it had a couple of words in German. It was a picture taken by a GI when she married him. I got to know her, she stayed after closing, telling me how it was being a young girl after the war was over. She married that GI and that's how she came over.
She was overly nice to me, I could tell. One night she told me to come to her house for dinner. It was on Tuesday, and I cleaned up and shaved even if I didn't have to. That night at her house she fed me, talked about when she got married, how she wasn't a virgin. What happened after the occupation, and how the young girls earned money. She married that GI, nineteen years old and he brought her back to the US with him. I learned about war brides.
Olga looked at me and said I reminded her of him, and Olga took my virginity.
