I Woke Up Very Slowly, I Think I'm Awake Now

My high school days were miserable, never fit in, never had a best friend. College wasn't much better, except I didn't have to deal with my mother. I took a job after college far enough away to justify my own apartment. My life was lonely, no one hung out with me.

I frequented this neighborhood diner on Sunday. I was never a church goer. The woman behind the counter was polite but distant. One Sunday after the usual she asked me where I lived. She was interested where people lived who came there. When I told her my complex she said she lived there too, what apartment?

The long and short of it, she was that woman who accepted her feelings, I was that woman who denied them. She was forty plus, I was twenty plus, a twenty year difference. Her hands were sure of themselves, she had lots of practice. My hands and fingers were slow and tentative. Her kiss was firm, my answer was unsure and frightened. That first time, that experience is hard to put into words.

I am now in my thirties, with a girlfriend I met at work. We are moving to New Mexico where she grew up with goats and the desert. I'm the one who is a city girl, but I'm looking forward to a new experience. The hospital is a lot smaller than I'm used to. More intimate. Another opportunity to learn about myself, but now I have a girlfriend.
