It's Time To Face The Music, Pay For The Right Of Passage
I suppose that this should go down as part of the college experience. I met her when we were in college, at one of those very progressive schools, that formed the progressive movement. She came to our firm to help with a divorce. Our firm specialized in lesbian family law matters, at the exclusion of any other subgroup. Me, I am a paralegal, and practicing lesbian. She is my sister in law.
She has been married ten years, claimed to have never consummated the marriage. She had in fact, gotten married to obtain a residence card, the husband had helped her so she wouldn't be deported after college. The divorce after a suitable time was never filed and she had never paid the lawyer fees or court fees. Another firm, not this one. Now, she is 32 years old, a practicing lesbian, and married to a Republican man. And that's what angers her, not that he had never consummated the marriage in her mind, not that he had helped her skirt the law, it is that he is a Republican. She confronted him, and found him unimpressed with her arguments, and called her for not producing children.
In our practice we see many lesbian women, of all sorts, albeit not many Republicans. In Southern California, lesbians generally lean progressive. The onslaught of lesbian marriages after the Supreme Court allowed it, is now in full swing of divorces. Our practice has more cases than we can handle. This case, well she is a friend from college, and it was I who had encouraged her to marry to get her green card, and she's family. At that time neither of us were practicing lesbians, or considered ourselves such. And we lived in a state that had not yet permitted same sex marriage. It wasn't an issue, we were queer, in the odd way that we were in love and didn't know it. We had not yet 'fallen' into sex and avarice.
I should add for full disclosure. The Republican man is my brother. And no, he doesn't approve of my behavior, and surely does not approve of hers. She is his wife legally, and he wants her pregnant. And yes, in his part of the story, the marriage has definitely been consummated. I believe him. I was there. It was part of the agreement for him to stand in and marry her for her green card.
Now she has to face him, to produce a child for him. Or he won't let her get off easy and agree, again, for a divorce, so that we can get married. This time it is going to cost her, the only way he agrees she has to pay, with her body, and this will not be an immaculate conception. And I support him, bring on the babies. It's not that I need to get married. We are fallen women, we have lived in sin all these years. And I want something more than to say we are living together. It's time for us to have our own babies. Even if they are Republican babies. He's my brother, should I have to submit to intercourse with him? She is his legal wife, that's my summation. She shouldn't be trying to get help for a divorce, not when she is perfectly fit to consummate her marriage, with her very fertile body.
