My Mother’s Boyfriend

My Mother’s Boyfriend was bisexual. How did I know this ? Because I met him a year earlier in a Craigslist personals forum. At the time, Craigslist had a “personals" section which allowed for direct messaging between users. The personals section allowed you to meet other single men and women. I met her boyfriend in a bisexual chat forum.

We chatted for a bit and agreed to discreetly meet in a park by the beach. We spent about two hours in the front seat of my car kissing, hugging and performing oral on each other. From then on we “dated” for the better part of six months. We saw each on a regular basis. We generally spend at least one night on the weekend at my apartment and we’d meet up for dinner at least one other night during the week. We eventually just drifted apart. He was in the mist of a divorce and the stress of the divorce was overwhelming both of us.

A year later, there he is, sitting in my mother’s house as she introduces me to him. We lock eyes for only a few seconds, but it felt like an eternity. Fortunately we were able to compose ourselves without throwing up any red flags for my mom to notice. I stuck around for about 30 minutes, exchanged some light conversation with him and my mother, then excused myself to leave. My mother called me later that night to ask my opinion of him. I was polite and gave a typical reply, “seems like a nice guy” I hope it works out”. I couldn’t tell her what I really thought. I certainly couldn’t tell her the truth, I would have been outing myself as bisexual.

Two days later I received an email from him. The same email address from a year earlier. This time he invited me to his apartment to talk. He was genuine and sincere, as was I. We both agreed it was a delicate situation. He offered to leave her for the sake of the conflict of interest between me and him. He didn’t want me to out him and I certainly didn’t want to be outed. We shook hands and I left. Happy for the both of them.

Deep down inside, I’m jealous of my mother. I’m jealous of her happiness.
