Being A Father Is Not DNA, Being A Father Is Being There Every Day

I walked into my house and my father was there. I only knew him from pictures. The conversation was two strangers. My mother listened but didn't interfere. He has pancreatic cancer and wants to set things straight. He set up a trust fund for me and my brother, enough for us to go to college.

I don't feel anything, thank you for the money, but why didn't you pay child support. I don't wish cancer on anyone, but I don't really know what I'm supposed to do.

The 'father' in my life is the man my mother works for. He stood for me, he made sure rent was paid, there was food, clothes, Christmas. He provided the hugs a girl needs, he drove us to Disney World when I was twelve. He shares his time with us, he gives me advice. I love him, he is the father in my life.

I wish he never came. Now my heart and mind is troubled, I'm not at peace. Even my father figure' can't settle me down.

There are no obligations and just the shared DNA is not enough. If you have the time let him have some. It likely will not be available later. Listen and record his story. That does not mean allow him to go on with excuses. It means make him talk about his life and those things he has learned or done. get to know him as a g*ft to yourself. If you come to dislike or hate him that is okay. It is okay to like him also. You have this opportunity for yourself not him.
