And, That's The Rest Of The Story, A Man Has To Know
Several years ago times were not well for me. I was alone on the Holiday and feeling sorry for myself. I went out to eat, I was hungry, and depressed at staying indoors. The only place open near me was the Waffle House. I was surprised at the number of people there, mostly men. The waitress said I could wait or sit with someone. A man older agreed to have me share his table.
We talked about little things, and big things, before we got around to why we were there that Thanksgiving. As for him, he was a 'confirmed bachelor', I missed the hidden meaning. I was there because I had estranged myself from my family, and I was alone that day.
We had the special, a far cry from home cooking. After lunch he invited me over, catch a game, if that was my interest. It wasn't, but neither was spending time alone. He was 'strange', educated but unemployed. His place was presentable, nice, comfortable for a man living alone.
It was much later that afternoon that he asked me if I liked company. Again, over my head, and I said yes, but depended on who. He asked if I was interested in getting better acquainted. Snd he stepped over to me. Do you mind?, he asked me, and kissed me. Bit by bit, a move here, a smile there, I was the object of his affections.
The rest of the evening was about getting better acquainted. Until there was nothing to meet, nothing to uncover. Although a confirmed bachelor that Thanksgiving there was no bachelor, and I wasn't lonely. A man's got to know, he told me.
