I Ran Away And Found Myself Where I Started, In The Closet

I needed so bad to get out of my country. A man I had met offered to get me out by marrying me, and after I was a legal resident abroad we could dismiss the marriage. At first everything went like clockwork, the marriage was legal, the embassy gave me a visa, I had a two year provisional residency. The lawyer told him he had to stay married until I had my permanent residency, much longer than he first imagined.

We went to where his job was, and moved into a small house. I got a job as a receptionist at a company that could use my language skills. Everything was fine, until I met this woman and things got serious with her. I came out to him. He was not amused. I understood that bothered him, although I was surprised he hadn't surmised on his own. That is the reason I needed to leave my country.

At his company's Christmas party we had to pretend. It was the first time I met his coworkers and the company management. There was a lot of alcohol and instead of driving back to where we lived we took a room in the hotel. He was very drunk and decided it was time he had a honeymoon. I woke up in the path of becoming pregnant. We had a son nine months later. He decided that since we had a honeymoon and I was pregnant we were going to stay married.

I got my permanent residency, three years later my citizenship, we had moved into a house with our son and we were living the dream of millions. I did not dare bring up my true reason for leaving my country, I never talked about it, much less acted out on it. I buried it in me.

We are now ten years married, we had a baby girl eighteen months ago. I've learned what it means to pay attention what side my bread is buttered. When I was living in my country I dreaded my future, as some man's wife with children. That is my life now. A choice I've made, adopted in my new country, where no one cares who you sleep with.
