The Emergency Called For Different Times
We were pretty well to do when my father had a stroke and was left totally disabled. Our mother tried to make ends meet but we slipped further and further into poverty. My father died from neglect and lack of resources, my mother became mentally unstable. We were broken up and placed in foster care. I was placed with an older couple. Nice but they only did it for the money. What I was given was nothing, they kept the money for themselves.
I learned bookkeeping from my first job, and was working for a company with low pay because I was not degreed. A man took a liking to me because I was young. He made every excuse for me to be in front of him. When I went to his office I stood, he would look at me.
One day I was called to present myself to the Director of Office Management. She told me to sit and wait, and the man came in. I was given some exams to complete, exams like I had never seen. A few weeks later the Director called me again. The results of the exams were in.
I was given a different job, and sent to schooling. Every week I was sent to that man. After my schooling was completed I was assigned to another job, then another, and another, from one end of the company to another. And every week I was sent to the man.
I was by then assigned to a job with great responsibility for sensitive information. I had been advanced, one title labeled Secretary, another Special Assistant to the Executive Department. And every week I met with the man.
One day I went to work, I was called to a meeting, I went to a room with other men and I was the only woman there. I was asked questions and opinions. When the meeting ended I was called to see the man. And so it went, different meetings, different opinions, my title was secretary, my other title continued to change. And the salary changed until I earned more than my father ever did.
When the man told me he was retiring he asked me, will you come? I was well instructed to understand. I went with him.
