Not All It's Cracked Up To Be

Most of my friends have read VC Andrews, so they think my family situation is cool.

My parents are brother and sister, so I'm supposed to get twice as much love. I'm my dad's daughter and his niece. I'm my mom's son and her nephew. But they're still just two people, so I don't see how they could possibly have twice the energy. I know I get only one Christmas present from my uncle-dad and one from my aunt-mom.

People are always sad for me when I explain I have only one set of grandparents. They assume my other grandparents have died, or that they live in a country that's too far to visit. Nope, I really do have only one set of grandparents.

Whenever there's a family tree exercise at school (this seems to happen in every grade), things get complicated. People think I've made a mistake connecting brother and sister in my parents' generation. I usually add a Post-It Note to explain.

On the whole, my life is pretty normal. I love my parents. They love me. It's just weird for me sometimes, navigating the world.

Nina - that's a strange name for a boy...and your profile says female. Did you forget to change your gender back when you made up this story?

Anon1, sorry, obviously, I meant I'm my mom's daughter and her niece, too. All the terms get complicated in a family love situation. You know what I meant.

VC Andrews just happens to be one of the world's most popular, and profitable, young people's fiction author franchises. I say author franchise instead of author because she died years ago and a ghost writer has been hired to take over. That's how powerful her name is.

She had the courage to write about family love, showing its dark side but also its tender side. Her books and movies at least let people know about new possibilities.
