Turning 50 Still Dealing With My 'condition'
On vacation I met a guy who pushed me into having sex with him. The problem, underaged and lesbian. Pregnant at 17 by a stranger I went into a meltdown. No one but my lesbian aunt knew about my persuasion. She held my hand, told me to have my baby, and if this guy has the balls to take responsibility, marry him.
Marry him? Yes, get married, make a home for your baby.
It was hypothetical, until it wasn't. It was more than suggested I needed to get married, grow up, raise his baby, have a few more, go to college. Or be a teenage single mother. Child support was a drop in the bucket, teen mothers tend to live in poverty. Well what about, you know? I'm lesbian. Oh forget that, once married you will learn to live him and you'll live through it.
I froze on the day I was being given away, no longer able to hide my condition, a seventeen year old girl and a twenty eight year old Marine, graduate Engineer getting his life going. I took crash courses in child birthing, child care, cooking and housekeeping. I finished high school remotely, gave birth and with a six week old baby moved in with my husband.
My first day with him I got my first lecture, his expectations were for a modern, traditional housewife. Well educated, mother of four, home maker. Career? After the kids had flown the coop I could focus on that. And what about 'that', my aunt told me to keep 'that' out of the discussion.
Well, I report I've been married, four kids, home maker and mother. One night not so long ago I quietly told my husband about that part of me I had kept quiet. Not that he hadn't noticed, or that it surprised him. His Marine Corp training taught him to deal with adversity, why was I different?
At least it's out in the open, but not a topic of conversation. My kids are in the dark, my aunt is no longer with me, I only have my husband to talk about being lesbian. His views are typically male, he has a friend whose been paralyzed since he was seventeen, make the best of my condition. 'You're married, you have children, you have a home, you have your health', you're lucky.
