I'm His Girl Now, She Has A Job, And He's In An Institution

If bad luck upsets you, this is a bad luck story.

My best friend married Tony, a nice guy, school valedictorian, good looking. After two kids and a new house Tony dove into the water hole on the river. He hit a rock, broke his neck, a quadriplegic. Life went away, poverty, the only rehab services he was eligible for were state services. His work insurance paid two years of disability. I had to stop taking her calls, I couldn't listen. I was unable to help her, the most I could do was company and babysitting.

Frustrated I went to my boss, he owned the company. Maybe he had an idea.

He accused me of being a 'girl', looking to a man to solve my problem. He told me life was tough, it wasn't my problem. Sometimes life was horrible. They would go on public assistance. I fell apart in front of him. He asked me what I thought I could do, 'anything'.

He said he would look into it, but I owed him. He made some calls, found an agency and a private institution. Charity. The institution would give him room and board and care, he would live in a building with twenty two other paralyzed individuals. Hus wife could get a job, get her life together. Mind you, I owed him big time, he had cashed in a big ticket.

I became his lover. A ticket I could never pay.

It's been five years, my friend has a job, they pay her some money, but not enough to live on. I help by being the 'auntie', but it's not enough really. My boss and lover listens he relents when I beg him. He's institutionalized. He has his mental faculties, but he's totally disabled. His SS disability goes to the institution.

I'm in it for the long haul, as long as my obligation isn't settled, or he gets tired of me. But he's attached now. Really attached. He can't conceal it any more.

That is hard to read. I'm still glad I did.
I have asked some people I know, what motivates them. What are we here for, what's out purpose in life. Very few have any idea. One fellow who is religiously motivated to provide wellness services that state keeps trying to shut down replied that we are here to contribute. That's the best answer I have received so far. Some say we are here to learn about and to love.
Caroline, what you are doing is both of these things. I don't know for how long you are going to be able to keep this up. it's a big sacrifice that you are making. I don't know how you do it. I applaud you.
I thank you for you contribution. You are making a difference.
