Crossing The Border Because It Was The Only Escape
I was born on the other side of the river. My mother didn't make it across. A friend of hers took me and brought me across, she raised me. Somewhere she got some papers that said I was born on this side and I went to school. She worked many different jobs, but during the time I was about ten to twenty she managed a laundromat in the neighborhood. I worked there with her after school, people paid by the pound and I did the wash and dry cycles, and folded the clothes. If it was a good night, lots of customers, sometimes I got a dollar.
We lived in a house on an unpaved road. It wasn't until I was old enough that I learned that she was never able to get pregnant. Later I learned because she had the clap, gonorrhea. I also learned that she and my mother were both prostitutes at a bar. It was when my mother didn't come back that she took me and got across the river.
In school there was a lot recruiting from dealers and for prostitutes. You got paid a lot of money, there were bars where the men came from the work looking for school girls. She kept me from becoming a prostitute.
After high school, I was one of those girls that did graduate, I went to work for a lawyer's business as a file clerk. The wife trained me, and I learned a lot of things about legal paperwork. She thought I was smart enough and I could handle college so she insisted that I go. The lawyer didn't like my papers and told me that to make sure I needed to get married and get some real papers that way. I married a man twenty years older than me. Everything was alright until one day he said he wanted to see if I was worth the risk and he took me back to room and had sex with me.
I was twenty, so it's not like I was under age. I was also already in college. After that he had sex with me whenever he wanted. To me that is what married men did with their wives. That's all I saw growing up. A man wanted you, and a man had you. The most difficult part was when you got pregnant and had to make the man pay child support. The lawyer I worked for did just that, he was a divorce lawyer and his wife was his assistant. They only took a case when there was money up front.
I didn't try to not get pregnant. I didn't use anything or make him use anything. It's not that I wanted to get pregnant but getting pregnant wasn't the end of the world. By the time I finished college and I wasn't pregnant he wanted me checked and told the lawyer that he had been cheated. The doctors never found anything wrong with me. It was him.
I got pregnant by the lawyer before I got divorced. I have my papers, all tied with a ribbon, I have a couple of kids now, and work for the lawyer and his wife. The lawyer helped get the woman who raised me papers, through an amnesty procedure. After she got her papers she went back to where she and my mother were prostitutes to see if she could find out about my mother. She never found out anything, she disappeared that night.
