I Left Home For College And Walked Into The Gay World

My father's little sister married a guy in college before graduation. She didn't bring him around to present him. He was from Buffalo NY and lived in Manhattan. He had a small store of men's wear. That's what we knew about him. There were never any kids with my aunt, she claimed that he had been injured in Korea. Everyone assumed that he had suffered that kind of injury.

In my college days, I'm talking mid seventies, I went to NY during the summer and stopped into to see them. They were hospitable and offered for me to stay there. From the moment I said hello to him, I felt something strange about him. I was there over the weekend and I went with them to a party. Everyone there filled the vision I had about gay men. I didn't realize it then, but the women were gay too. The talk, how they stood, what they wore, everything about them was so gay, screamed homosexuals. I met a friend of theirs, Pat, who owned the place where the party was, showed me around and called me 'honey'. Back in the bedroom, he grabbed my penis in my pants with his fingers, 'such a pretty boy and so little time to get to know you'. And then he leaned forward, and kissed me on the lips. 'You can come and stay with me, and not bother your aunt and uncle'.

I wasn't able to shake the felling when Pat grabbed my dick and kissed me. The first chance I got I called him and we talked for an hour. Pat told me all about the big bed he had waiting for me. 'We can make love all night long, but you have to come see me'. He offered to pay for the ticket, I could fly up Friday afternoon and back on Sunday, and we could have a nice weekend together. It was on impulse that I accepted and two weekends later I was with Pat and he was making love to me. I loved every minute of it. Pat had money, it wasn't his gallery that supported him. He showed me some behind the counter art work, of gay men and nudity, and asked me if I wanted a piece to take with me. It was a charcoal the size of a notebook, of a naked man with a very prominent penis. He kissed me goodbye when the cab came, and the invitation was always open.

It was through Pat that I found out about my uncle's injury, he was found out with another soldier and they were discharged unceremoniously. I also found out that my dad's little sister was a lesbian and they had a marriage of convenience. He was gay and she was lesbian. It made sense to me. And it answered a lot of questions, because of what I had seen at that gay party I went with them.

I went to NY after graduation and lived with Pat as his 'ward'. I worked with him at the gallery, and a lot of the business was these underground paintings. Primarily gay, but here and there a lesbian painting. I met this large crowd of gays and lesbians. As I was part of the culture both my uncle and aunt forgot I was a stranger. The decade of AIDS was coming, and the effort of gays to come out came with it. When the rumors about gay actors became rampant, it was only a matter of time. In our corner of the world, everyone that was gay was gay and lesbians were lesbians. But a block up it was not discussed or talked about.
