Unconventional Is The Best I Can Call It

The night was wet and the road was dark and I ran off into a ditch. It was a long time before a pickup stopped and offered to help. The car was stuck, nose down and he offered a ride into the next town. Getting to town was a thirty minute ride, except he was stopped by the town cop for doing fifty in a thirty five. I walked from the court house to the local motel, it was one in the morning and I had to wake up the night clerk to let me in.

The next morning at the Cafe I ran into the cop that pulled the fellow over and he told me he had detained him because he couldn't pay the two hundred dollar fine. I felt obligated and I bailed him out and paid the extra one forty five to get his truck out of the impound yard. Real welcome folks in that town.

Getting a wrecker to get my car took all day and the garage wanted two fifty. It was getting pretty expensive to get my car back on the road. What happened next I didn't expect, the fellow had told the jailer I was his sweetheart and we were looking to get married. While the shop worked on my car we were down at the courthouse signing papers.

We left, me going my way, and him going his way, except for that paper we wouldn't be seeing each other again. It was one year later that we met at my court house to 'undo' that paper. We're still married, don't ask me why. He lives where he lives and I live where I live. And we meet when we need to meet, once in a while. I should have never let him get close and tender. At least I was married.
