Texas Is Hurting And Our Prayers Are With Them

I got married at nineteen during college to a very mature grad student. I had stars in my eyes. I saw my knight in shining armor. I wore my ring, quarter karat, with pride. We moved into the married student apartments right off campus.

A guy on our floor told my husband he wanted to take a turn with me, if he let him, my husband got a turn with his wife. I found out because the cops came to arrest my husband because he beat the guy up and left him unconscious.

When he finished his degree he took a job on campus while I trudged along for my degree. We moved to Texas, a far away land where guys and gals really did wear cowboy boots and said y'all. I learned to boot scoot and birth babies, and host backyard BBQs. Coleslaw, peach cobbler went well and when we went to a friend's BBQ that's what they asked me to bring along.

One day my husband showed up with a great big pickup truck, he had been promoted to field engineer and we moved to Midland where the special at the Golden Dragon Chinese restaurant was chicken fried steak and cornbread. I learned how to be a housewife, taught to me by all the housewives of my husband's coworkers. No, a city girl, my mother hadn't taught me. I was told flat out, teach that girl of yours or she'll never find a good man.

Football on Friday night, boot scooting on Thursday. Oilfield work was hard, twelve hours was just about right. When my man came home I fed him, showered him, made sure his balls were drained before I put him to bed. A wife's work is never done. If he can pull twelve hour tours so could I.

We've lived in London, Singapore, Rio, Houston, Oslo. Everywhere we went our boots went with us. When the kids were asked by other accents where they came from, they said Texas, no need to say USA. Of course the grandparents came from Pennsylvania steel country, and Ohio farms. Interesting, but they have Texas blood, that's from where they are.

Tonight we held hands around the table and prayed for those lost in the Hill country. The boys cried, their sister held their hand.

Yeah, prayers are going to help. Just like every time there's a disaster, politicians say "thoughts and prayers" , because it's a lot easier than actually doing anything worthwhile.

Do you actually think God is waiting around, counting how many prayers he gets, before he does something? (Jesus looks at his iPad: "Nope, not enough prayers yet, so I'm going to wait before I do anything")
