How I Met Her

For reasons that don't make sense today I asked to be transferred to the ER of the hospital. I had taken some trauma care courses, and I knew that the staff there would teach me. I went down there because I had a crush on a certain someone, a doctor from North Carolina doing her residency.

We had a lot of cases, the ER is full of things you expect and some things you don't. As an inner city ER we mostly had poor people looking for medical care, some emergency deliveries, and gun shots and knife wounds. Very little traffic accidents. The work was tiring but not exhausting, I made sure I could be assigned to the shift with you know who now. Whenever we worked together I did my best to impress her of my capabilities and training. She was so good at it, a natural. I won't go onto say beautiful, so beautiful. The patients, police guys, staff from the hospital all were in love with her. It pissed me off, because I came first, I was the first in line. I really loved her, they were just admiring her. I took care of her. Even to the point of reorganizing her purse and hanging her jacket up in the winter.

We had a case of a fifteen year old girl in for an emergency delivery. After the baby came and she was sent off to maternity I made the comment to her that the only reason I wasn't one of them, was because I was a lesbian. She looked at me, stared at me, 'was it necessary to say that?, Don't you think that is too much information?' And then as she walked away, she turned to me, I'm a lesbian, but that's not why we are here. Well the ice was broken. I said 'I love you'. It escaped from my mouth with out any warning.

She worked me hard, expected me to do everything, 'you are going to be the best damn ER nurse they have ever had here'. I got kissed, on the cheek with a smile. 'Don't make too much out of it'. I was invited to her place for a sit down dinner. She told me she was hosting me, so sit back and be tended to. I got another kiss, this time on the lips after I sat down at the table.

"This is the way it's going to be, we are both professionals'. She went onto to tell me that she was going to be there until her residency was completed. So between the two of us I was the one that had to change assignments. Go upstairs, or find a place at another hospital, we will both be working long hours, and unpredictable. If I come home and your in bed I get in with you, if you come home and I'm in bed you get in with me. She did let me help her clean up the kitchen and I spent the night with her.

I changed jobs, went back upstairs and we had a coded word for working late and the bed was always kept warm for her. I was more regular in my hours so I adjusted to her. I got reports from the staff at the ER as to how wonderful she was and she had new earrings. We made love, for some reason when you are a medical professional, it is hard to just 'make love' without getting to technical. I learned and she learned, by the time she was finished with her residency we moved to another area where she got a position with an ER group. The big difference is that we got married. And I took her name. Making me a Mrs.
