Unapologetic Lesbians
I went to college at a very liberal school. I was learning, and trying out, relationships with other girls lookin for something new. I was a sophomore, living off campus, in a small two bedroom one bath unit, with three other girls. We had small full beds in the rooms, so we doubled up and shared bedspace with another girl. Not just any girl, a girl we wanted to sleep with.
My arrangement was in full bloom, not just lovemaking, we had progressed to being public, openly gay and a 'couple'. It got back to my parents. I had refused to come home for the Holidays because I couldn't bring my girlfriend home.
I was taken by two men, and 'enrolled' in a conversion program on a ranch high up in the mountains. Opening every day was a full Mass, religious studies, psychological tests, offered to become a Nun. It was cold, we had a light cotton smock to wear. All the girls shared with all the chores. Why they thought that putting twenty lesbian girls together would set us 'straight' was beyond our comprehension.
The way out the door was entering the novitiate to become Nuns, or marrying a man and get on with baby making. I chose the man and baby door, I wasn't really Nun material. The man I was promised to was an immigrant, very religious, who needed a spouse for obvious reasons. I did not choose. I married, and he promptly set his mark.
We moved to a small community where he set up a business selling cheap imported goods. I worked beside him, children under foot, always pregnant. At one time he had wanted to become a Priest, so our lives revolved around the church. Overtime we were well established, he volunteered and I did too. I met this one young woman who questioned her faith and her love for another woman. I pushed her into marrying a man, having many children, devoting herself to Christ, as I had done myself. The conversion camp had done a good job with me.
We remained very close, sharing this secret that we had. Overtime we became lovers behind our husband's backs, behind the church, behind our children. Our love affair has lasted these thirty years. Unapologetically lesbian. Angry husbands, incredulous children, the church no longer welcomes us. You cannot change a leopards spots.
