And The Light Turned On And I Could See My Path Was Wrong And Repented
I was in college at the time, in a same sex relationship with a journalism major. She was a firebrand, and became wholly immersed in the activist lifestyle. Already on the rocks I asked her to attend my cousin's wedding. She was against white supremacists, oligarchy, patriarchy, etc. She came, and I was immediately embarrassed.
We were sat at a table with two other couples, older with wedding bands and smiles. My cousin opted for the obedience vow and my girlfriend was on fire. The man across from us explained in a calm voice that we all obeyed on a regular basis. The police? the schedule of classes, and that their beliefs were that there is a man of the house, and the wife and children were obedient. It had worked for centuries, and 'her' model was a complete failure.
At that point I added, 'if he were the man of my house, I would be obedient'. Well, she threw her drink at me and walked out screaming. I apologized for her behavior, and the wife stood and walked me to the ladies room to help clean me clean up and loaned me her sweater.
She asked me if I meant what I said, being an obedient wife is not easy. But, she showed me pictures of her children. A house cannot have two heads, so the wife accepts her husband. It wasn't long after the wedding that I became pregnant, and I recited my obedience vows to him. He is the head of my household, the father of my children. I shoulder my share of home making, of maternal obligations. A man is what I want and need in my life, I just couldn't see it.
Our community is tight knit, with neat and clean homes and children. Some men carry the obligation for more than one wife, some do not. In our community being fruitful is our purpose, and when we take his hand to be his wife we accept that he is our head of household.
My friend, that woman, went to live with her kind, was found on a sidewalk in a homeless encampment in Seattle over dosed and near death. She is unable to care for herself. Her family requests contributions. Our family prayed and agreed to share from our savings. If only she had seen the light he showed us that evening, to take his hand and join his house and be worthy.
His traditions, centuries, millennia old, are what our Lord calls us to be, obedient wives and mothers. Her ways lead to the gates of Hell. I cannot favor her, her path is wrong, and she's proved it.
