My Angel Is No Longer With Me, Only In My Heart And My Memory
Way back in my young adult years I suffered a severe 'accident'. After the trauma teams had examined me, they recommended an above the knee amputation. I wasn't conscious, only my brother was around and he refused the trauma team recommendations. I was patched up and released from the hospital, with a few pain p!
lls. My brother was instructed to intern me in the county hospital.
I survived, barely. I spent the better part of two months before coming too. My leg somehow, slowly was healing. A young first year nurse was in the room when I came too. Let me just say, falling in love takes an instant. She was professionally removed, very serious, was unpleasant when I touched her hand. However, she took personal care of me. By personal, I mean personal, from feeding me by hand, to cleaning me after defecating. She shaved me, cut my hair, Read to me. When I asked her why she took care of me, she would answer that she got the short straw.
Six months I lay in bed, she came in early, left late, and many nights slept in the room with me. I was aching to get a life, but I couldn't. What life I had, she gave me. Nine months and I stood for the first time. Twelve months I could maneuver slowly. I could sit up and feed myself. She never left my side. She stood outside the door to the bathroom, she sat me on a bench in the shower and lathered me, shaved me, washed my hair. And dressed me.
Fifteen months I went outside, she went with me. Eighteen months I walked with a cane.
I never got over her. She never left me. Fifty five years ago, I was a wounded soldier. Fifty five years ago an angel came to nurse me. Step by step, day by day.
My angel left me. All I have now are the memories. I go to her grave side every day and let her know I love her.
