eight years ago, I made a terrible mistake. I was dating a girl who was pretty clear that she was in love with me and wanted a future together. I knew that I didn't feel the same way about her, but the sex was good so I didn't break things off. I guess I just thought everyone has a first love that doesn't work out so someday she'd look back on things and not hate me. Also I figured that she was getting something out of dating in her words "the hottest guy on campus". I wasn't faithful, but I wasn't blatant about it. Nonetheless, word got back to her. She was devastated and demanded I promise to only see her. I refused and dumped her.

At the same time, she found out she was pregnant. At first, I didn't believe her. The timing was just too coincidental. But then, it turned out she was pregnant.

I panicked and tried to convince her to have an abortion. When she refused, I packed up and left town. For the next 8 months, I worked odd jobs and lived with friends trying to stay low.

My ex, I'll call her Kerry. Kerry's parents spent all of their savings on a private investigator. Soon after they found me, my son was born. I knew he was mine because he has slightly webbed toes, just like I and all my brothers do. But I said he wasn't mine so that I didn't have to pay child support for another two months until they could do a paternity test.

Once the test results came in, the judge ordered me to pay $100 a week for "Justin's" care. I managed to get fired so that unemployment would have to pay while I worked under the table. I did this for 2 years.

When Justin was 2, Kerry married a guy from her church. He wanted to adopted my son, so I said yes. Less than a month later, I was diagnosed with leukemia. I almost died. My then-girlfriend left me. I was even homeless for six months because I couldn't work. After a three year battle with cancer, I went into remission. I was out of treatment for three months when I was hit by a drunk driver. The accident almost severed my left arm. I started to look at my life. I realized I can never have children.

A couple months ago, my best friend's wife ran into Kerry and found out that she is getting divorced. I'd like to make a fresh start with Kerry and our son. So you think she'll forgive me?

It sounds like you've been dealt revenge in spades 7 times over. I don't think you have anything to lose in trying to make an effort to at least be in your sons life. As for Kerry's life, it might take her alot of time to forgive you or even consider forgiving you. I think if you admit the wrongs you have done in the past and honestly and truly are out for her forgiveness, then you have a chance and are taking a step in the right direction of putting your life back on track. You seemed to have learned your lesson and realized how you screwed up, and that takes a lot for a person to admit and fess up to. Try and get back into their lives, but if they will not let you back in, at least you tried and you know how they feel. Good luck, and hope things improve drastically for you.

You can't go back. Too much water under the bridge, besides you were a real asshole and don't deserve another chance. If she takes you back, she needs her head examined.
