Two years ago, I was about to break up with a girl I'd dated over the summer. Then I got the news that my mom had been in a serious car accident. "Jenny" was constantly by my side as we waited for my mom to come out of sergery, wake up from her coma, and handle the news that she had lost both legs and most of her eyesite.

I guess I forgot all about breaking up with her because of the accident. But now I think it was fate. She's a wonderful girl and I was about to lose her.

Last Christmas, Jenny was in the kitchen with my mom. I heard my mom say "I couldn't do this without you Jen." I knew right then that I had to marry her.

So I started saving up for a ring. Last night I bought it. My plan is to propose when we open our presents. Only my sister says its a bad idea for two reasons: 1) if Jenny says no, it will ruin Christmas for me forever and 2) the engagement will get lost in the excitement over my nephew's first Christmas.

What do you ladies think?

#1 Yes, if she refuses, it will ruin xmas.
#2 No, it may be your nephew's first xmas, but is you propose that will be what everyone remembers about this xmas good or bad, guaranteed

It occurs to me that your sister may not want to "share" her son's first xmas with your proposal, that is why she is saying #2.

I say go ahead and propose. If you guys have been together for this long and through so much together, why wouldn't she want to marry you? So it would make Christmas an even better holiday for you. I was proposed to on Labor Day this year and now Labor Day is a special day for me whenever I think about it. And so it's your nephew's first Christmas, big deal. I think it's really selfish on your sisters part to tell you not to propose just because it's her sons first Christmas. Your happiness should be what matters to her. If you aren't quite sure about Christmas, you could always do it on New Year's Eve at Midnight and tell her that you are doing it then because you want to start the year off right. Either way to me seems really romantic. Good luck and hope you and your girlfriend are very happy during the holidays and coming new year!

This same kinda thing happened to my uncle. He and my aunt to be were just going to get engaged and stay engaded. But then my aunt got pregnant. So two weeks before christmas my aunt gave birth to a baby girl. It was my cousins first christmas and my uncle still proposed. He said having the baby was a miracle but it should be followed by another mircle then he proposed. He told my aunt that they brought such a wonderful miracle into the world why shouldnt another miracle happen. My cousin was also a premature baby she wasnt suppose to be born until febuary but the doctor said when my aunt delievered her it was a miracle she was even healthy enough to survive. SO my aunt and uncle got married in febuary only two months after christmas. SO i thin kyou should propose

My husband proposed on my birthday. I guess on some level, it was what I really wanted for my birthday, but I largely forget about the proposal date now. I say it's better to have a separate day as a date to get engaged and celebrate later.

However, my sister in law got engaged the day she found out she passed her bar exam and she says, it just made the occasion doubly happy.
