I Was A Prostitute Once
I was the one chosen to go with him to the conference. It was a blind ballot, who ever chose the black bead. The conference was in Las Vegas and had a reputation for getting out of hand. That's why no one wanted to go.
We flew on different planes, arrived at different times. I checked into my room. An hour later he arrived. He called, asked me to join him in the bar. The bar was full, noisy, men of all sorts. Some women, and of course the cocktail waitresses. I was ok until he put his arm around me, so I excused myself and went to my room and ordered room service.
He came by my room around midnight, I didn't let him in. He went away angry, I knew that, he wanted me there for him, and I hadn't gone along. I slept poorly, was up in time to attend to the booth in the hall. I wore the company issued shirt that was too small.
After the show there was a dinner with the customer who had been invited and for which I was brought along. I was warned about that. The customer expected that. I went to the dinner, but was distant and quiet. I paid more attention to the waitress than him. I was taken aside and encouraged, he was a big customer and that was my job.
I feigned a headache and told him I needed to go to my room. I went down later to find the waitress and asked her if I could see her, and we went to her place after she got off. She told me what men expected. I told her I could not go with that man. She let me stay with her. I was at the booth the next morning, but I wore a borrowed sweater and complained if the cold. I did not go with that man, or the man from the company. I slept with her instead.
I left the job soon after that and returned to Las Vegas and got a job waiting tables. Every day, most days, the men that were there expected women every night. I was always careful not to be of interest to them. My interest was elsewhere, more and more. That life, was no longer for me, my life was with her.
