My landlord owned 3 apartment buildings. He was a real slum lord. Year after year he proved to be worse and worse. After a few years later I got cancer and found out it may have been due to the mold in bathroom and kitchen carpets which were two decades old when I moved in. He had a bad habit of scheduling work to be done on the building when he knew I would be sleeping. He never notified me in advance to give me time to prepare with ear plugs or find other sleeping arrangements. I would simply wake up one day to loud banging noises and an unapologetic workman. Another of his bad habits, despite not having a mortgage was to raise the rent to the highest possible amount. He knew a lot of his tenents would not be able to afford the expense of moving out and would simply sacrifice other things to pay the rent to avoid eviction. At one point he began taking in section eight families because the government paid him a lot more than the going rate for rent. One day he sold one of the buildings to someone who made him an offer he could not refuse. But a condition by the new owner was he had to evict all the tenents first. In Rhode Island the only way to evict a tenant quickly was to raise the rent to an amount impossible for the tenant to pay then when they don't pay evict them for non payment. So he tripled everyone's rent. One woman had recently lost her job and was already a couple of weeks behind so she and her little girl were the first to go. Another tenant who was in her 70's and whose husband had just died of cancer and had lived there for over 50 years and always paid her rent on time was the last to be evicted which took five weeks. Then I lost my job. The day I lost my job the landlord came by and informed me that my rent was going up from $825 a month to $950 a month which was about $200 a month more than the apartment was worth. I told him I had just lost my job and would not get any money for a few weeks.
I figured This asshole needed to be taught a lesson and I was the one to do it. So I strung him along for five months giving him one whopper of an excuse after another and making up a story about getting a legal settlement from my boss that was going to be in six figures and he was going to get all the back rent soon and so on. On the day I was supposed to start a new job, one I had invented for my landlord's benefit, I moved out, but not before trashing the place, literally. I had accumulated months worth of trash and garbage and strewn it all over the place. I don't cook much due to being single so I left the refrigerator filled with garbage and then unplugged it. It had not been opened for about six weeks when I left. It will no doubt be fun for him to clean. I left the drains and toilets clogged. By the time he discovers it the place will have been flooded pretty badly. That should serve him right for never fixing any of the leaking faucets and they all leaked.
I saved up weeks of piss in bottles and several bottles of old curdled milk and poured them out on the 35 year old wall to wall carpets before I left. The final thing that I did was baracade the doors from within. The front door was easy, I just placed a book case between the front door and the staircase making it impossible to open the front door. The back door took a little more work. I tied a string to one end of a short beam of wood and threaded the string through the key hole. Then I lowered the beam into place between the door and a wall then let the string fall back through the key hole once the beam was in place which made it impossible to open the back door. Now the only way into the apartment is to climb a ladder and smash a window and climb inside. that will be fun since I covered the floor in front of the windows with roofing nails and took out all the light bulbs. I didn't steal the lightbulbs. I simply put them on the table. The windows face an ally so that even at noon you can't see into the apartment well enough to see the floor or what is on it. As clumsy as my landlord is he will no doubt trip and fall face first on the floor in front of the windows.
He doesn't know yet that I have moved out. Officially he can't force his way in until either I notify him that I have moved out or he comes with the sheriff to evict me. I am already over 1000 miles away with no plans to ever return to that town or for that matter that state. When all is said and down, he will have lost $3300 in back rent and have to pay a cleaning crew thousands to clean up. He will have to pay a repair man to repair the damage he will have to do when he breaks into the apartment. He will have to pay thousands in legal fees and court costs. Tenants who have already moved out don't have to pay a cent in court costs and legal fees over an eviction in that state. Also in that state a tenant cannot be sued for cleaning, only actual damage and only if he directly caused the damage. So I cannot be sued. When I moved in many years ago I had talked my landlord into letting me move in without a security deposit so he can't withhold it as he never had it in the first place.
This is what the asshole gets for what he did to several very nice people who never did anything to him other than make the mistake of moving into a slum lord's slum.
