I can't seem to help myself, I get put in a position of trust, and I steal...
I am a store manager , and for the past 10 years I have completely accessorized my home with goods that I have taken,
in my last job there was an admission fee, I took half of the admissions cash, and now I have over $10,000.00 in cash in the bank.
I just needed to tell someone, I feel better now.

People who embezzle money over a period of time, don't usually get in trouble right away, it takes time. Even if your working at another job, I'm sure they are just waiting for the right time to come at you. Don't worry then you can really tell everyone when you story is in the papers.

I worked as a store manager for over 30 years and a salesman. Occasionally a few bucks might find its way into your pocket, or a radio might "fall off the truck". I guess if one isnt paid what they are worth and cant buy some of the things they sell they feel right doing it.

One thing a retailer has to remember, there is a thing called inventory. A number of dollars of stock goes into the store and after selling over a years time a new inventory is taken and the shortages show up. Where did the stuff go? Shoplifting? In the time space of 30 years Ive only had the experience of someone shoplifting something in my store I think 3 times. All of it was small stuff worth from $10 to $90.
Most all shortages come from internal loss from employees and managers, plus outside contractors like service techs and others that come to your store and come in contact with merchandise.
What happens after a time is that the losses show up and questions arise. Dont think for one minute the people that work there dont know whats going on and if someone, anyone is packing some stuff in their pants or carrying out the trash (like making a trip to the dumpster) become obivious.
Someone somewhere will blow the whistle. Especially if they are getting the heat for not "watching" the store for thieves.
So One million dollars in inventory goes in, and 500 thousand gets sold, thats normal. The other 500k is supposed to be there.
There are professional inventory takers, like in my home area, maybe you heard of REGIS--a group that comes in and goes thru every open box, opens some full ones and does a very through check of model numbers and whats there and what is not there. They do supermarkets and WAL MART and other big stores. I spot their tags when Im shopping when they have been there like a day before.
Na, its not a good idea to take anything, as in the end the company will make a change and the man in charge there will be out of a job. And in most cases all managers and salespeople are Bonded, that is, insured by a company against theft. Their job is to find out the source of shortages. Once that goes on, the manager or others are out of a job and blackballed for good.

So use common sense. it aint worth it, someone is watching whether you know it or not.

It's a dangerous game my friend. The longer you steal stuff, the better the odds of being discovered. All retailers have Loss Prevention units to thwart people such as yourself. And as one of the other people replying to your posting pointed out, even if you're very, very careful, audits of the books, including Inventory Cycle Counts etc., will reveal to management that they are bleeding someplace. You could be asked to take a lie detector test. You could be secretley videotaped or otherwise observed.

Bottom line is that if you value your job, you should stop immediately. If you don't understand why you are compelled to do what you do, get some therapy. It really helps to talk about stuff like this with an impartial person that can help you understand why this kind behavior appeals to you.

If the $10,000 really bothers you, you could always send it back to the company you stole it from. Just get a money order whch makes it totally anonymous. Or you could give it to charity. I'm not saying that's what I'd do but if your conscience is really bothering you....

Hope you work through this stuff.
