After my discharge from the service I took a solo trip to Europe, no place in particular. In Belgium I met a freelance reporter who mesmerized me with her stories. I'm usually careful, but many lonely days and nights and under her spell I ended up with her at her hotel. We continued to see each other, spending the nights together. She was headed to Athens and I went with her, from there she was headed to Nairobi. I went with her.
It was Africa, she was investigating in country, I was being a tourist. We shared a room, in the hotel we were obvious. I was sitting at breakfast after my friend left for a couple of days to Uganda on her investigation. This American doctor excused himself and sat with me. He ordered breakfast, called me by name. When the waiter left he told me who he was and I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was headed to Europe and suggested I go with him.
The police had been watching my companion, and he had been brought into the matter by a local friend of his. And our girlfriend behavior, and my companion's nosing around. He suggested I go with him to Brussels, that day, right then. I still don't know why I believed him, I got scared, we checked out, at the airport he bought me a ticket, the police stopped us but he talked them into letting me leave with him.
Back in Brussels we traveled to New York and from there to Denver. I stayed with him more than a few days. He advised I not contact my companion, lay low and disappear into middle America. I did find out my friend from Brussels was a nosy reporter, looking into things best left alone. Kenya didn't like homosexuals and the hotel had tipped off security. The doctor, an MD with another profession, keeping his purpose in Kenya from me at the time. And here I was in a mountain cabin with this man.
I don't think you switch from lesbian to straight, but I do think that you meet someone you can't walk away from. And this is what happened with me and the doctor, I can't leave, I am with him, in this strange relationship. He chose to stay put as he calls it, settle down with me. And I am settled down with him, in a man and wife relationship. I know his business, and I help him. It has everything to do with medical equipment and supplies for clinics and hospitals in Nairobi than something nefarious. His brother in law from doctors without borders is his local contact.
