When did it become undesirable for a neighbor to be quiet, keep to themselves, and mind their own business? The other neighbors are all up in everyone's business, and thats fine for them. I'm polite, friendly, helpful, but have no desire to participate in that. I also don't call the police at the drop of a hat, yell at them for minor infractions, complain about all their noise, and I don't invite obnoxious people over. I get that they're not going to necessarily like me, but what's wrong with just leaving me alone?

Whenever I'm outside doing something, washing my car or getting my mail or whatever, they will actually stop what they're doing and glare at me. Really nasty looks. I mean "if looks could kill" type looks. If I say hello they snort like "how dare you talk to me." Why is this necessary to behave this way? Could you more sociable people help me out and explain?

Society is pretty much like that everywhere. You can't drive the speed limit on a road, you can't voice opinion without getting shouted down and you can't be friendly with anyone. We're all still 'all about me' and suspicious of everyone else's intentions.

If I lived next door to you and you said hello, I'd say hello back. We're not all jerks.

I agree. I am policte and friendly with my neighbors. With the exception of one. But I'm not alone on that one. The one neighbor is a trouble maker and just plain white trash. So a majority of the neighborhood dislikes them. But as far as everyone else I try and make it a point to wave and say hello. When someone new moves in I introduce myself and say welcome to the neighborhood. It may seem weird but I perfer to know what and who is living next to me. Ya never know if you have a child molester or ex convict moving in. Besides being friendly with every one helps the neighborhood when it comes to crime watch and things of that sort. Makes the neighborhood safer.

I thought you liked being by yourself, so whats the problem if they don't run over and kiss your feet, go back in a basement corner where its damp and dark.

Now now, nobody wants their feet kissed. I'm trying to find out what the problem is so I can resolve it :-) Nobody's hanging out in a basement, I'm talking about minding my own business while still being polite. I'm trying to find out why that bothers everyone so much. Apparently you're the type it bothers. Why is that? I really want to know.

Next time someone glares at you, you could try asking what's the matter. Not in a confrontational way, just with honest curiosity. If they say, "Nothing." You could explain that they seem to have a problem with you and you'd like to know what it is.
This doesn't always work. There's a woman on our street who always has a sour look on her face and who seems to be really angry at me and my husband. I have asked her what's up and she denies anything is wrong. God knows what her problem is, but she had her chance to clear the air and she chose not to take it.
Maybe your choice to keep to yourself makes you seem aloof to some of your neighbors. it sounds like you just enjoy your privacy and I see nothing wrong with that. People have different social styles. Not everyone likes having neighbors running in and out of their house like family. Different cultures have different ways of dealing with personal space. it could be that your style doesn't fit with the way your neighbors were raised.
I'd be glad to have a quiet neighbor who doesn't talk my ear off.

You don't have any friends that like you being polite and freindly? I think the problem is all yours, you know they don't like the way you act, so why push it? Go get your mail, mow the grass, paint your fence, clean the windows and what ever, and forget there is anybody around, if they want friendship they will come over and ask for it.

Wow. could you move in above me? I would crave at least one quiet neighbor where I am.

I'm so mad at half our neighbors I just want to do a Walking Tall moment and level every turd-bag with a 2x4. It's funny, I move from rural to the city 11 years ago because it was dull. Now I would pay for dull. It sure beats loud music, offensive attitudes and the general lack of respect people have for one another today.
