I had to move from one state to another quickly for a job this past summer, and I had one day to come and look at this duplex. It's in a great, safe neighborhood close to where I work, very residential, mostly single homes.

The driveway for this building and the house next door abut each other, so there's about 12 feet of paved driveway between my half of the duplex and my neighbhors' house. I've lived in this kind of proximity to other people for the last 20 years and never had this kind of problem.

They're a young couple -- early 30s -- with two boys, five and seven. The five-year-old is the rudest, loudest, most obnoxious child I've ever met. (I never hear the seven-year-old.) Their scheduling compounds the problem.

The kid is never, ever, ever NOT screaming when outside. I'm talking screaming at the top of his lungs, squealing, yelling -- all kinds of noise, and usually right outside my windows. He screams from the time he leaves the house for the whole five feet until he's in their van, and then he keeps screaming in their van. This is first thing in the morning, before 8:00 a.m.

Then the kids get either driven to or picked up to go to the grandparents' (her parents) about a mile away, every evening after dinner. Loud noise -- screaming child, horn beeping in driveway when Grandpa comes to pick them up -- at about 6:00 p.m., and then a reprisal at 9:00 p.m.

The father is useless, totally useless, and yells every time he's outside. Instead of walking the 10 feet from the garage to the backdoor, he'd rather yell into the house. The couple fights loud enough in their house with their windows closed for me to hear them in my apartment.

The kids run all over the yard here and the five-year-old frequently bangs on my side of the building. There are horns beeping, kids screaming, and zero sense that they know they're living within 20 feet of other humans.

I try to keep quiet to be considerate, but I'm thinking of giving them a dose of their own medicine come spring. I know that the mom is miserable because she's married to Useless Man (he does nothing around the house...except for make noise with loud outdoor appliances all weekend long, as long as it doesn't include yard work -- think obssessively cleaning his car and van), and I'm sure the five-year-old is a handful, but fuck all I'm tired of this.

Their house looks perfect, so at least they're not trashy. But I just don't understand why they're so inconsiderate. It's not "normal family noise" that bothers me; it's all the other stuff.

My neighbor across the street has a nasty habit of pouncing on me the moment I get home from work to suck the life out of me (she's retired and a busybody), but at least that's momentary and I don't hear her when she finally exits to her own house.

Damn.

I don't understand you people who post just to tell people to stop bitching. 1. You clearly don't care to hear people bitch, so why are you even in this section? And 2. Read the site title. It's called "I Hate My Neighbor". That might as well be titled "Bitch About Your Neighbor". So quit "yer" bitching about others bitching.

My neighbor had two kids like that, as I said, had, one day they were in my yard pestering my dog again, I chased them with a snake, they both ran out the gate and into the street where they got hit by a brinks truck. Sure was quiet in the neighboor hood after that.

These people are so wrapped up in their miserable, little lives, they don't know/care that there are other people on the planet. And if the father yells all the time? Well, you know where the five year old gets it. I also had neighbors like this. Loudmouthed idiots, with three of the rudest, most obnoxious little bastards around. Constant yelling, screaming, fighting, crying, doors slamming, radios blasting, you name it. I knew they'd never move and I couldn't afford to, so I invested in an iPod and a set of custom earplugs. It was worth every penny. They still make noise, but it's easier to ignore them. You should thank God these heathens are at least quiet at night.
