We have lived in our home for almost 20 years now. Before the neighbors next door moved in we got along well with our neighbors. They are a young couple. The boyfriend is a beer drinker and the girlfriend is a prima donna. The boyfriend gave my daughter hell in high school. When they moved in they promptly went out and got 2 huge dogs and three cats. We are not allowed to have fences in our neighborhood and their dogs kept getting loose. They just allowed their three cats to roam. My husband and I have always big landscaping buffs and enjoy our time in the gardens. The neighbors cats have destroyed so many of our beautiful plants. Our cars are constantly getting scratched and dirtied from the cats jumping on them. We put a wicker set on our front porch so that we could enjoy sitting outside only to have our furniture taken over by her cats. Now we have to be careful not to sit down unless we clean the cushions.
I have tried every cat deterrent I can think of and nothing works. I made the mistake of asking her a couple of times to control her animals behavior. After one of her cats ran into my home and tore through the house like a bat out of hell as I was leaving for an appointment- I was late, I called the animal warden. cats in our county are considered feral animals so they won't pick them up. However, they are also considered "personal property," so we can't trap them and take them to the humane shelter.
Anyway, we wrote them a letter asking them to keep their animals off of our property. we asked them to call their animals home or come and get them if they saw them on our property. Previously, they would ignore the behavior as if they thought their animals had the "right" to be on our property. The letter was a bigggg mistake.

They came over, beer in hand, and called me some choice names, told us we needed to be on medication. threatened my husband with harm if their cats went to "jail" asked us why we couldn't ignore cat shit in our mulch, cat hair on our furniture, and what's a few plants? I told them that an autumn sedum cost 20.00 a piece an evergreen 49.95. and replacing mulch was expensive. I told them we should be able to enjoy sitting on our front porch without being covered in cat hair and fleas or being harrassed by their animals.

Now we are the assholes of the neighborhood. when my grandchildren come over to visit, they are treated like criminals and are not allowed to play with the other children. Two other younger couples gather frequently in the neighbors front yard drinking, making remarks, laughing about us. I am snobbed by these neighbors and the looks I get could kill. I feel like a prisoner in my own home. we cannot move.

I don't understand the disrepect that people have for other people's property. I have a cat that I trained from the time we adopted her to stay within the confines of our property, but she is indoors mostly. I did not want her to be a nuisance to my neighbors. This was all that I asked of my neighbors. I did not want to also have to "live" with her cats. Now they have alienated us in the neighborhood. How do you get past this. I want to make them suffer for the way we have been treated.

You do not have to tolerate bad behaviour from animals or their human attendants.
I don't understand why you can't get the animal warden to cooperate with your problem, but frequently, these folks are afraid of their office. A call from an attorney to their offices should remedy the problem.
From your post, I gather that these "neighbors" have threatened you physically. Make and keep a record of whatever encounters you have had with your neighbors and get legal counsel. From your tale, there IS a clear pattern of their continued abuse towards you, and especially if you are elderly, this is blatant harrassment and should not be tolerated.
If taking legal action results in your being ostricised in the neighborhood, well, do you really want to be on good terms with this bunch of thugs? As in the school yard, if you make an example of the biggest bully, the rest will leave you alone.
Good riddance to bad company.

Yes, blatant harrassment that WILL be enterpreted as wreckless endangerment. It sounds like you have a good case for a civil suit, if not a criminal indictment. Maybe both. take some of your gardening budget and dedicate it towards this end. Go get the bastards!

If you've got a video camera, charge it up and start recording some of this nonsense. The rampaging, roaming cats...the loose dogs that could be a menace or a possible risk to one of the small children walking on the street that might possibly be mauled by one of these beasts...anything these people do that is absolutely and utterly illegal and violates county ordinances and the like. Maybe target some of the other idiots in your neighborhood and turn it over to your local news station and let them ask your local law enforcement agencies on one of those special news reports they do why they aren't doing they're job when you're taxpayer dollars pay their salaries. Guarantee that'll get you results. Someone will start to pay attention if you can document it with video, photographs, and notebook logging. Then they can't deny the evidence.

This is terrible....I understand how you feel, I too feel trapped by my freaky neighbors. People are so wierd, I cannot understand how they can be so selfish. Our neighbors are also beasts, they chit chat and gossip over the hedges and fences....we do our own thing but seems if you dont join in then your the object of their yap. I`m not a gossip therefore we have been alienated. Thankfully we have fences and are just about to raise ours to the allowed six foot....they have four cats that regularly do the dirty in our garden and I cant tell you how many times I`ve put my hand in it...I love gardening and we have, as yourselves, created a lovely place to sit in.
Your area....the governing area board or council....where you pay your taxes etc, is there not something written into the ground rules or something, surely the person that came up with the idea of no fences etc must have realised something like this might happen.
Well I hope something good happens soon, I`m sorry I cannot come up with anything constructive but I just wanted you to know I am on your side being a keen gardener and a respecter of other peoples claim to equality.
Good luck and good gardening.

This happened to us too. I'm very sorry it's happening to you. Some people just don't care about other people's quality of life. Here are a few lines from, "I Hope You Dance," sung by Lee Ann Womack and written by Mark D. Sanders and Tia Sillers: "I hope you never lose your sense of wonder...I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean...Don't let some hell-bent heart leave you bitter...I hope you dance." I hope this helps.

Get a herbacide such as roundup. When they're not home, use it to spell out "asshole" or other choice words in 3 foot letters. It won't be noticeable for a few days until the grass dies.

steal the cats one by one and remove them from the area. take them 20 miles away and set them free somewhere and see if they find their way home.

Soft cat treats laced with rat poison is a FANTASTIC cat repellent.

Antifreeze works well too.
