We have this neighbor who parks his work van and truck any old place, blocking our driveway so that sometimes our trash isn't picked up or our mail delivered.

He has this exotic bird that is constantly squawking at all hours of the day and night (I thought birds slept at night).

When he's mowing his lawn, he sits on our wall to take a break and whenever he drinks something and doesn't finish it, he just dumps the leftover in our yard.

His mother-in-law visits them, and she'll walk by our house and just take flowers from our garden without asking. I was in the garage cleaning my car when I saw her do this. I came out and she just looked at me and walked away--no sheepish smile, no apology, nothing.

He leaves his car stereo on in the driveway and blasts his disco music (he's in his mid-40s) so the neighborhood has to listen to "Funkytown" and "Double Dutch Bus" play repeatedly and endlessly. He has one of those loud, bass booming type of stereos that the all the young guys had in the 90's so not only do we hear the music, we FEEL the vibrations and booming too.

His son is about 13 and he's a brat. For some reason, he always comes in our front yard and even into our garage (!) to play! We've asked him nicely not to trespass but he still does it so we talked to his parents. His father just looked irritated that we would complain about his son but at least his wife was apologetic and promised to keep him out of our property.

What is kind of funny about our neighbor is that all these inconsiderate things he does to our neighborhood, if anyone does anything to him, like park too close to his driveway, he gets all mad and demands that they move it. Isn't that always the case? All these people who are so inconsiderate and thoughtless are the very ones who get all teed off if it's done to them?

We had thought about calling the cops but when an incident happens, say like his annoying bird squawking all the time, it seems so petty and trivial to be bothering the police about it. But I guess I wanted to vent because all the little things that happen so often just build up. If you're reading it to the end, thanks for letting me whine.

Tea and crumpets for the burglars, right?
I think your neighbor (and his mother-in-law) have your number.

Look, if the guy blocks your driveway, call the police.
If he drops his drink cups on your side of the fence, wait until nightfall and drop them back over on his side.
The next time mom-in-law picks your flowers, yell at her.
The kid? Well, he's a kid and is most likely looking for attention. He may actually like you guys.
Get yourself a nice pair of speakers and blast AC/DC in his direction.

Thanks for the advice Anonymous, 08/05/2004 02:57pm!

I think what it comes down to is that we have to stop being such wimps and instead of bitching and moaning, do something about it--like you said--call the cops when he blocks the driveway, etc.

I never thought that the kid might actually like us and that he's just looking for attention. Something to think about it.

Thanks for the wake-up call!
