I'll start by saying that I hate to complain about the petty since there is so much more horrible shit going on in the world than having to co-exist with assholes. But, I think everyone needs a place to come home to where they can take a break from the assholes we work with, shop with and share the roads with.

Anyway... I live in a state of perpetual sunlight. My neighbor has a spotlight shining on my house and in my backyard. The light encompasses the entire width of my property. Closing the blinds only dims the light halfway. What's worse is that the spotlight is triggered by motion and cycles on and off all night if the wind is blowing.

Yesterday the two 60 or 75 Watt bulbs where changed out for two 100 or 150 Watt bulbs. When I got home last night and the potlight turned on, I thought the mothership landed in my back yard...

Why?

Well first thing dude, 60 or 75 watt bulbs sure as hell can't be classified as spot lights, 100 or 150 can't either. How big are the bulbs in your living room lamps? you really need to get a life.

Yeah..I have an asshole neighbor that shines a 400-500 watt spotlight in his yard that spills into my yard. naturally it shines right on my pool so when I am coming out of it at night I am fu*@#%& Blinded by the light.
I really want to get a large mirror to block the light and shine it back into their own yard....ASSHOLES!!

<I>"I live in a state of perpetual sunlight."</I>

Those Alaskan summers can be a bitch. If it isn't still light at 1:37AM, it's the damn mosquitos that are big enough to give John Goodman a lift from Anchorage to Prudoe Bay....

Seriously, tho, I realize you are probably guessing about the wattage of the bulbs. Are you certain these lights are intentionally focused on your yard? Are you on otherwise speaking terms with your neighbor? I'd just ask the neighbor to change the lights focus.

If you are not on speaking terms and you can proove the lights are focused in YOUR yard, and they are causing your violent headaches and you are abjectly dry retching during the several minutes they are on but you continue in agony into the daylight hours and are missing work and developing bald spots, etc. - - the neighbor's lights <I>are</I> a violation of most municiple codes, and, even if you live in a rural area, they could be viewed as harrasment as well - -if you want to go that way.

I would wait until you have some other, perhaps more demonstrably egregious complaints w/ neighbor, cause these little courtroom dramas are $expensive$, and intentionally so. Plus a REAL attorney is going to want you to have some other issues anyway.

On the other hand, lights DO deter crime. If you can put up curtains, look at the annoyance as a minor inconvenience.
Nothing galls these types like thinking their little pranks are going unnoticed.

How right you are that nothing irks these type of people more than their antics going unnoticed!!!!

In my town, it is illegal for any lighing fixture with a 200 watt or more bulb to shine on anyones property. It is considered "light pollution".
Some people just don't give a rats ass how kindly you ask them to move their spotlight off of your pool. Just at my mere gaul for asking my neighbors to move their light sent the (BIPOLAR)wife into a tizzy...then again.., just about ANYTHING will send her over the edge with her fragile mental health.

I wont ask them again...I will just get a LARGE reflector to block the light to bounce it back and see how they like it!!!!

Any chance of talking to the neighbor to tilt the light just a bit in the other direction? That would make a world of difference for you nd your property.

If they are "unapproachable" could you go ove and move it when they're not home? I agree, it could be a safety issue and they feel the bright light will deter intruders, but there is a limit to what is reasonable. Could you ask the local PD to come over at night and see your situation and talk to the neighbors for you?

Good luck..

Like another poster stated; many towns have laws on the books making it illegal for others to shine light on your property. First step is check that; and if so give them one shot to put some blinds on the light and if they don't bring in da law man.
