never mind asking if he may want to do the car some harm. call the police. I see anyone around my car at 2 in the monring I call the police.
now now now. if i called the police every time someone walked near my car in my complex parking lot, i'd be arrested myself.
i need more facts.
His family is one of the original families on the street, and think that they rule the neighborhood. You know the kind; they think no one should change anything like paint their house or do some landscaping without consulting them about how it should be done. When we or anyone else does work on their house, they call the authorities and say we don't have permits (we do). They have an incessantly barking dog that they never shut up but called animal services to complain that we were letting our dog crap on their lawn (and we don't even have a dog).
They throw trash on our lawn, they blow fallen leaves into our yard, they sweep dirt from their gutter and dump it on our sidewalk. They harass the old man and his wife on the other side of their house too.
This particular guy is picking up the bad attitude of his family. He gives me the stink eye if I happen to be out watering the yard (I've always been polite to him and his family regardless of their ill will). The other night was weird because he was stooping to check out the car, and was doing something underneath it.
We are quiet neighbors and are gone a lot. We don't play loud music. We keep our house and yard tidy. The neighbors are malcontents, and this guy has a bad attitude. I was very concerned when he was hanging out around my car and looking into it and messing around underneath.

A complex parking lot is very different than having your own driveway. If someone came across my yard or walked up my driveway to crawl underneath my car, I'd have every right to call the police.
I'd have a surveillance camera pointed out towards the driveway and record everything as evidence if anything *funny* happened to my car.
Thanks! The fact that he's looking guilty when he approaches my car makes me suspicious, plus he's doing it late at night when he thinks I'm asleep (I work late nights at home). I don't know enough about cars to be able to determine if something has been done to it, particularly up underneath. Next time I'm at the mechanic's, I'll have them check it over.

I also would think about parking my car somewhere else.
You could also get one of those car alarms that go off when a someone touches it.
If you can, take your car to a mechanic and have say what kind of condition the car is in. Take pictures of your car.
Maybe??? Make your car less likable. Put garbage in your car.

ha ha ha, you gotta call this one like you see it. a total poser. Tell him that he ought to stop pretending to be ghetto and take his sorry ass down to the mean streets in your town. That ought to call his bluff. Maybe he will accept your challenge, go downtown and never return!
call the cops and report a burgelar is prowling in your yard. give the description that fits this lousy asshole perfectly and when they ask you if you saw what direction he headed, point to your neighbors house.
