Shifting Sands And An Unexpected Outcome

Back when I was younger I got involved with a coworker, a nice girl from Kentucky. I overlooked that it was her first time and found her clinging to the relationship. Frustrated with her I opened up to my wife of five years. After getting an earful of how dare I mess around on her she went into female defensive role and told me that some women never give up on the man they give themselves up to, case in point her who went under as a freshman and was talking to me about a girl she didn't know.

I arranged a lunch on Saturday, a steakhouse out by the mall. I gave them each a short bio of the other one and we met at 1 pm, right on time. My wife hugged her, one of those hugs women do and said something about "I'm here for you". They talked, backgrounds, common interests, their jobs. From time to time my wife held her hand across the table. The eventual characterization of men and their penis came and they shook their head at me. When I tried to interject I was told that this was a woman thing and maybe I should go to the bar and get a drink.

I was called to lunch, my wife had ordered for me, the conversation was more inclusive and far away from the topic at hand. Over coffee they told me they were going to come up with a solution, but I needed to prepare myself, neither one was going away. Let that be the lesson, keep my zipper up and leave other women alone. At home that night my wife told me she liked her and she could see why I was attracted to her. I needed to get it through my head, girls like them were not one night stands and once given they were committed.

The months passed, they did girl's night out once a week, they planned activities for the weekends, they sat side by side, they laughed and talked about things, like looking for a house. On one random weekend my wife said, and she made sure it wasn't a suggestion, that we needed to go on a three day weekend, the three of us 'like a honeymoon'. They had talked and after thinking about it they wanted to combine their forces and work at making a home together, after all they weren't getting any younger.

These two are a force unto themselves, the honeymoon weekend was enough for them to put any differences aside and combine their energies into one household, one life. I woke up to the realization that I was the third wheel, these two had fallen in love. And that's the way its been these last fifteen years, they live together in the house we bought together, I live in my own place where I am lord and master, alone. They plan and include me when it's convenient, they want me around when there's a need for correction with the children, when they HVAC repairman comes, when they overdraft their account.

I know, it's not for me to understand, my wife tells me over and over that she 'knew' that day we had lunch. She just 'knew'. It was like a lighting bolt through her heart.
