I'm 47, and enjoy reading the postings here. What I want to share is that my job just got "downsized." I will be out of work May 31.

I always put family first now, rather than the future later. I never went to college, don't have any certified skills although I can do a lot of different work.

So,here's my advice for anyone getting out of high school:

1. Stay in school! Get an Associates Degree at least.

2. Not "the book type?" Learn a trade. A plumber or an auto mechanic can make damn good pay. Get a certificate!

3. Talk with people you know that works in factories or large corporations. You'll find out that while they're paying bills, their upper management is buying luxury or sports cars, and live in houses that start out at $400,000.
Two of the hiring conditions for one of the VP's here was a HUGE house, and a Cessna airplane.

4. Put your family first. Working all the overtime you can may bring money, but you sure miss a lot of things at home. And when it comes to your performance review, you get rated as "competant." Managements main concern is profit, at your expense.

5. Set your goals high. Most anyone can get an entry level job - see #1. Start at the middle or near the top!

I know this is the same thing most of your parents have been telling you. Don't wait until you have a mortgage, need medical benefits, and you lose it all so the company can "save money."

My dad now works 6 days a week for 12 hours as a restaurant cook, he used to work 7 days a week but he decided he needs a break because he also got diabetes :(
He never got any education higher than 6th grade i think because he started working. Put my mom and dads pay together and they could barely pay the house payment of $2000 a month. Money is such a big issue in my family and were struggling. I hate how were living we haven't had extra cash for ourselves for almost two years! My dad is basically working his ass off for the house & it feels like for my brother also. He's always asking for money & for some reason my dad gives it to him (even though my brother is a High School dropout) But when i ask (im the good kid that doesn't get in trouble and is doing well in school) they don't have any??? Its rare when i ask for money seriously maybe once a month for $5 for lunch (im not kidding). I just don't understand my dad and why he favors my brother it really hurts my feelings but i've learned to live with it i guess. & because of this i understand that i have to get my education and get a degree somewhere to have nice things that i pay MYSELF.I understand were your coming from i wan't my future family to be happy & i will work my butt off for my children when i have them.
Sorry for such a long story i don't know if its confusing but i just wrote what i was feeling--and i feel confused
& what ever you do please don't favor one of your own children more than the other, a child can always feel it.

Honey, they probabally do not favor your brother. I am not there, but had a big family growing up. Me being the oldest, I got more of the money. I guess it was because parents feel they have to make up for whatever "wrongs" they have done. Maybe your father feels resposinible for your brother being a high school drop out. Your brother should either go back to school or get a job. Your parents will see someday, that giving him things will not help him fend for himself in a very rough world. I am a high school graduate, I have some college under my belt and work in a competitive job. My husband, also a high school graduate with some education in trade school and has been employeed at the same place for over 12 years. Every week is a struggle to make sure the bills are paid. We both work over time and still feel stuck where we are. Everyone, even people who make decent money...or even good money live on credit. Meaning, credit cards and financing. There is more to living a financial stable and secure life then going to college. The problem is everything is overpriced, including houses, food, gas, EVERYTHING!!!! You have to make the best with whatever your parents can afford and try hard in school to get a good education. Try to make it past college to get a good paying job. When you succeed with that, then you will be able to afford your own things and be proud that you did. But keep in mind not to overspend and you will always be okay.

I understand what your saying but i strongly feel like they do favor him. He's not the oldest its my sister, she is like my mother, she does all the things my Mother should do. My sister see's that they favor him too he's the only boy in the family. The only reason my brother got a job was to buy himself and his girlfriend things & yet he still asks for a bunch of money. Recently my brother got the car messed up (from a fight)but he lied to my parents and said he crashed it. I see no point in telling my parents the truth because they do absolutly Nothing about it. Infact they lend him their car and the other day he messed up the brakes so thats two cars down. We're left with one and he's out driving that car right now. We're so much in debt right now that we were forced to sell our house and he's not making it any easier for us. Plus the first car he messed up used to be mine, my dad supposably bought it for me for my b-day and i got it cheap for him too. But a week later he just decides to give it to him. That definatly hit me hard because i treasured that car i was so greatful. I don't understand its like i have to be bad, go get into fights, steal their money (he's done that to & mine)do bad in school, and yell at them to get what i want! Sometimes i have thought about just doing that and i did start doing bad in school but then i came to my sences and realized i will be only hurting myself in the future so im back to good. But i just can't stand them they are all wrong in the head! i can't wait to get out of here there making me go insane!

no place! It's only smart work for those who run the system which pays off big. You can get as many college degrees as you want. When even experienced engineers are being replaced by outsourcing to poorer countries and immigrants willing to work for a fraction of your pay those degrees won't help you maintain that so-called middle class lifestyle. Until the American people take up arms and confront their ruling class with determined and organized opposition your story will have no happy ending and will be repeated more and more often.
