Mother In Law, Grandmother, To My Husband's 'girl'
Two decades ago, that's twenty years to many of you, I made a mistake in pushing a young recent graduate on my husband. Shy, she did poorly on interviews and I decided yo help. My husband was looking for an entry level bookkeeper. That night he told me she presented poorly and he didn't think she would work out. If I felt I could approach her, he advised public speaking.
She was quiet, reserved, thoughtful. Shy. She answered in one word and refused eye contact. I was unable to reach her, I had done what I could, got her a job. My husband told me he would give her a couple of weeks, but in a small office he couldn't have a head case.
He took her under his wing. She learned fast, paid attention to detail. She was under employed, but she did her job. He extended her probation. He also started down the forbidden road, personal attention, physical approvals. Kisses on the forehead, arm around her shoulder, holding her hand when he talked to her. I got daily reports from her supervisor, she was a new puppy to play with, to train for his lap.
When I found out she was pregnant, a mere two months after she went to work for him I wasn't surprised. Her supervisor wasn't surprised, no one in his office was surprised. His favorited got pregnant. When I confronted him, he said she had gotten under his skin, and her getting pregnant was the furthest thing from his mind. Making her his, that was the only thing that mattered. Well now she was his, what was he going to do?
I tried to be jealous, I tried being angry, I thought it was funny. He got himself in this, let's see how he gets out of it. The only rule I put down, do not mess with that baby. She was so cute with her bump, she stole my heart, the hearts of her coworkers. The first baby in the office, she wasn't only his favorite. Along with her supervisor we gave her a baby shower, her mother came, her sister came, I was there. It was time to celebrate a new baby.
She lived with her mother who agreed to babysit when it was time for her to return to work. If there were any hard feelings it was between me and her mother. This baby needed my love too, and I was crazy in love with her. When by the by she became pregnant again, it was even less of a surprise, have your babies early, eighteen months is nice spread. With so many aunts at work, a mother and 'mother in law' fighting over baby sitting, well protected, no financial worries, she blossomed into a fine young woman. My continuing advise to my husband, hold her close, show her you love her, tell her you love her. Don't lose this girl, you will break both our hearts.
