A Three Way Marriage
I got married during college, because he was graduating. We lived apart for the next two years until I graduated and then moved in with him. My feelings for him were all in my head, living with him was hard. The trope of the man of the house was imprinted on him and either bend to his rule or get out. That's how I felt. I sucked it up, learning to be the woman of the house, staying between the lanes he allows me, being a Mrs. in spite of being so young.
One day in a conversation with him he asked me if I would consider some different sex. Like what, I asked him, or maybe it was what do you mean? He told me that during his time alone, he had met and gotten along with a girl at work and he wanted to bring her into the relationship. I bit my tongue, before asking him, if I had a girlfriend would you want to let me bring her into the relationship? He answered quickly, but you wouldn't have a girlfriend. I answered, maybe I do.
And that's how it came out. While he was having a girlfriend I was also having a girlfriend. Except my girlfriend was someone I could see in my relationship, not his girlfriend from work. We had a discussion, a fight really and he accused me of being unfaithful. So are you, I said. You don't know me I told him, you never did know me. I think that the idea of bringing another girl into the relationship is the right thing to do. My girlfriend, for me to have a wife too.
My girlfriend agreed on the condition she didn't have to have sex with him. I agreed that he could have his girlfriend but not at home. And after my girlfriend moved in I told him she was coming into our relationship as a wife, with all the rights and privileges. My wife. Not his.
In the end, we had to give up on the rule of him having sex with her. She was under his roof, and he had rights to her too. That was a decision we made, my wife, but his wife too. We are now into our tenth year, he and I got a divorce so she and I could get married. His affair with that girl ended a long time ago, she wasn't interested in such a complicated life. He has the role of benefactor and protector and we have the role of wife and supporter. It's his house, he sets the rules and we follow them. Even when they are crazy.
We are both now in our thirties and we are facing the clock, it ticks louder.
