It's Not What You Know It's Who You Know

My parents were strict, academic, religious. I grew up in a home with very strict rules, focused on straight A's, and getting into a prestigious university. But I had to get a full ride scholarship, my parents could never afford to send me to college. I did get a full ride, but to a state college, not an IV league school.

Swallowing their disappointment, I went to college. I had to line up a part time job, arrange my schedule so I wouldn't have to borrow money. Full ride doesn't mean everything us paid. I worked at the campus bookstore, at the registrar's office, and then by pure luck at the foundation for leadership, which raised money and prepared students for leadership in industry, government and entrepreneurship. They liked my profile.

That's how I met a mega donor. At a fund raising event. "If you are nice to me, I can help you". Nice, between the legs nice. I became his favorite. I got a full ride for my MBA, at a prestigious school. His Alma Mater. I got a job at a high end Manhattan finance institution, living in his apartment. I had plenty of notice to be available when he was going to be in NY. To catch a plane and meet him in LA, or Chicago, or Paris. With his connections I closed lots of deals, I was a leading producer at 27.

Time passes, he found another favorited, my turn to teach her, I was a senior staff member for him and had his ear. I just didn't sleep with him. His favorited did. I have a close friendship, but it's on the QT, I have to watch my reputation and not embarrass him.
