I have a sticky problem here. I am a black woman 26 years of age. Ever since I can remember I've always felt like I was different from some of the crap I grew up around. For instance growing up I was never afraid to venture out of things that were deemed "black". Growing up I had all races of friends, listened to all types of music including rock. Now as an adult I find it hard to relate to some of the hoochie mamas I live around. They fucking make me sick with their ten kids, baby daddies, fucked up attitudes, loud ignorant speech and their constant need to stare someone up and down. It gets on my fucking nerves. Then there are the black men who get on my nerves as well. I'm really fed up with this crap. Who ever said it was cool to be a "Thug"? Who ever said it was cool to buy an expensive car with no house? Jesus, I can't take it.
I'm nowhere near ashamed of being black, it's the ignorance that gets on my nerves. This isn't about sterotyping, I've lived this shit. And now it's not just black neighborhoods. EVERYBODY seems to want to be "Ghetto" what is this crap?????? Fuck!! Fuck!! Damn.

I'm not even sure where to start. Here goes...

I'm black. I grew up in a middle class family with two parents. Both have college degrees and worked in professional jobs. Neither has a criminal record or behaved immorally from what I can see. (In fact, my parents met at church and 35 years later they are serving as marriage mentors to young couples). My parents raised my siblings and I to be proud of being black and, more importantly, to live up to that pride. We are all law-abiding married young professionals with college degrees, mortgages, and kids that we support. I'd say that I was lucky, but the fact is that everyone in our neighborhood is from the same type of background.

So maybe its the part of the country you live in. Here, in Prince Georges County, MD, there are plenty of black role models for you to look up to. We are the best educated and highest paid black community in the United States. Many of us work for the federal government in high status jobs. Others are teachers, doctors, lawyers, architects, etc. We also have artists, poets, and entertainers.

Don't hand around such negative black folks. Come here where life is good and you can be proud!

I'm going to say something that may offend a few people, but please read it and think about it before ranting back at me....

I am a white man who used to deliver papers to a racially mixed neighborhood, one that I grew up in. One of the nicest families on the block was a black family. I went to school with one of their daughters. One day they told me they were moving because they didn't like the "bad element" that was moving in around them. I didn't understand, because the people moving in were also black. My friends mom gave me a glass of Iced Tea and sat me down and told me something that to this day I have never forgotten.

She said, "Honey, there are two kinds of people in the world and don't you ever forget it; there are black people and there are niggers, there are hispanic people and there are spics and there are white people and then there's white-trash. There's the good and the bad, and the bad is moving in and we're leaving."

I was astonished to hear these words from her, but you know, she was and is absolutely right. We, as all people, have to rise above the low-lifes, no matter what race we are.

Well,

You are so right about that and I appreciate your comment on this as well. No ranting and raving here.

Low lifes come in all colors and ethnicities. It's not a race, but a lifestyle. We were really shocked by the behavior of the East Indian family that lived next to us when we were living in London. Up to that point, I had only known Indians who were doctors, professors, and store owners. This family was in the "import/export" business, but I nver saw any of them go to work during normal business hours. All 3 kids were drop-outs and had criminal records. The wife was a complete slattern and a shop-lifter. She even stole the new rose bushes out of our garden.
