It's Me And Mary And Our Two Sons And Our Girl Ella, And Our Husband
This story is about me a Mary. Everyone else is a coincidence in place and time.
Mary came into my life when I was 18, new in everything, no experience in life. Mary sat beside me during orientation. She held my hand, you will do fine, she told me. We went through all our inductions, assigned to the same dorm. We asked to share a room.
Mary is my best friend. My first and best friend. We spent our university years together. After 'school' we both chose to certify in obstetrics. Delivering babies. Except the doctor delivered the babies, our job was to assist. We worked off an on on the same shift. But we had to cover day and night and all week long. When we had a day off together it was a holiday for us.
We were tired after a particularly busy day. We had drawn the same shift. The doctor was do young, as young as us. He was from one of those schools, did medical school at Harvard, now he was chief resident with us. Down in the trenches, he said, on the cusp of life. We delivered five babies that day. He asked us when we were going to take our place on the line, he promised he would deliver our babies too.
It was Mary who said 'with who?' We didn't even have a boyfriend, much less a husband. Don't worry about that, he was ready willing and able. It was an uncomfortable moment. Here we were caring for pregnant girls about to give birth and here we were embarrassed about getting pregnant. That's how all those girls came to us, when the man was ready, willing and able. When was it going to be our turn.
It was the following year, after his residency was complete, he was accepted in New York, as a baby doctor there. He asked us to come along. New York. He set us up in a family apartment. He kept tabs on us, requesting that we be his support nurses when he was on call. The days were long, the New York men seemed to be ready, willing and able, all the time. So many young girls, so many babies went home with girls not yet able to run a home.
It was Christmas Eve that year when our young doctor said to us, it's your turn now. And we soon became pregnant. We gave birth a few days apart, and yes our babies father delivered his own sons. What we did next was against the law, he married me in New York snd married Mary in Toronto a few months later.
Our sons are well along in University. We kept our family small, but in spite of our best efforts a little girl came along.
