Thinking Of My Grandfather, I Was Too Young To Really Know Him

I was 13 when my grandfather died. He was a war veteran. There were more veterans there. None of the veterans knew him, they came from the VFW post in Cumberland. He was buried in the cemetery on the hill. My father asked me to go to with him to his apartment. It was really depressing. His wheel chair was there, old books and records. In the book case I found an old telegram, from the war that his brother was missing in action.

I found a folder with a bill for electricity from 1945. A box of magazines. A shoe box with letters from some nurse he met in the Philippines. Another small box with two medals. That was his legacy.

I started thinking of him today, another ant in the war. He was wounded and he had to use a wheel chair. He became a bookkeeper after his discharge. He was born in 1921, wounded in 1944 in the Philippines.

He died from cancer.

Oh, Carol, what a lovely, solemn reminiscence for this Memorial Day weekend!

You do not know many details of your grandfather's life, and not many people who remember him are still alive, but by sharing what you do know with all of us, you are honoring his memory and carrying it forward.

I enjoy the titillating confessions on this site as much as the next guy, but reading something sincere, heartfelt, and dare I say it, non-sexual, is a pleasant surprise.

At least your grandfather went to bed every night knowing he served his country honorably, and that he served alongside absolute heroes who sacrificed everything. Despite being wounded, I bet he never complained to anyone about it, or ever expressed regret for going to war for our great nation.

I feel sad that he probably deserved a much more celebrated ending, but I am also jealous of him for having unshakable self respect and that he was tested as a man, and acquitted himself in full.

Godspeed sir.

Well that pretty much describes all of us: we’re born, stuff happens to us, we collect memories, we die, and someone cleans out our house.
